Well it was only this time last week i brought my seat leon sport 140 tdi with btcc kit and bbs wheels. I was over the moon with car and yesterday decided to give it a mojor service and change drop links as it was due also found the car had some nice upgrades like bigger arbs and eibach springs so i was dead chuffed with car , anyway This morning started the car and all seemed fine until i pulled off and i heard this really high pitch owl noise , through a search on this site i found it was a common problem with all pd engines and as owning a 150 tdi cupra and changing the turbo on that about a year ago i know its a common problem . The problem i have is does the turbo jus go instantly like that as it was running great yesterday after the service and had no sign of any turbo problems , i dnt actually kno if its boosting correctly now as i turned straight around and parked it back on the drive . The noise is there when i rev the car standing still . Could this be anything else ?. My last cupra tdi made the noise but only gradually got worse until it went , as this was fine lastnight and now its not . :wtf:

if u drive a car hard then just switch them off i heard that the turbo can seize, and the same if its cold and u nail it!! some metals need to be cooeld down/warmed up gradualy instead of instantly. did u change ur oil yesterday by anychance?

Yeah i changed the oil i used castrol 10 /30 it was costy at £65 gor 5 litres . Since i have had the car i always give it 2 mins before pulling off in the morning and if i did give it a little bit i would let it sit at idle for 2 mins . I dnt know about the previous owner i doubt he would be as cautious as me . The car has only jus reached 50000 , on my old cupra it when at 120000 its a fair bit of diffrence its like half the life of my old turbo . Cheers for your reply

I always thought you shouldnt let a car idle. As in if youre starting it up fron cold just get on with it and drive, dont let it heat up?

1 of my friends has a vectra sri 150 diesel he's always thrashing it and he never lets his turbo cool. hes just had 2 fork out 400 just for a new turbo.

You can just jump I'n and drive but use low revs but no harm has cone of letting a car idle for the first 2 mins to allow the oil to circulate and get to all the vital components first (turbo bearings) etc. Every turbo charged car I have had I always let them warm up for 2 mins before setting off or if I'n a hurry just keep revs to a minimum and I coast as much as I could until upto temp. I have never had any oil/turbo related problems and I'd say I have covered I'n excess of 250k+ I'n turbo powered cars.
At the end if the day a turbo I's a weak point I'n any engine build and to get a turbo to last beyond 100k then it's been a good run. 50k seems a bit low but by fat not the lowest. I have seen turbos go before 10k on newer cars. It's just a bugger that a turbo I's one if the most expensive components on the whole car.

Where did You get Your oil from ??

Skankfords ( halfords) . Its defernatly turbo apparently it the same thing that had happened to my previous seat cupra one of the blades have snapped and the reason for the high pitch noise is the broken blade spinning around and causing a whistling noise and also no boost . I managed to haggle 500 pound off the car so i suppose il jus take it on the chin . Any idea how much a recon will be . Im sure i payed 250.00 for a recon for my previous leon cupra but it looks a complete different turbo . Also i was told something mush have got through my Bsa cda airbox . This was already on the car any ideas of problems with these air induction kits blowing turbos or are they good , it sounds awsome tbf .

my blower went at 46k but had an AMD map on from 30k. only had the new turbo from SEAT on for 6months and im now at 57k(i do a lot of motorway mileage) its already sounding ropey again and i nurse the turbo always idling like stated above for a couple of minutes, not accelerating at all until at full temp and letting the turbo idle again for a couple of mins at the end of my journeys. The PD140 turbo is toss. Looking at a hybrid now if im keeping the car.

Sometimes turbos just go like that, mines been like that for as long as I've owned the car and no drop in performance or excessive oil use. Been going strong for a year.

If your worried check the inlet turbine shaft for play

Yea thanks for ur reply . Well i have had the turbo changed and the loud noise has gone but from 1500 revs to 3000 revs it kicks a loads of black smoke out and hardly had any boost but as soon as it passes 3000 revs it kicks u in the a"&e and goes . I know this aint right but my mechanic told me it could be oil in the exhaust and needs burning off . Im gonna take it for a good run tonight and hopefully clear all the smoke . I will have aa card next to me jus in case

Found out earlier the so called recon turbo is no good and needs replacing so i will be on the phone to them first thing , see what they have to say about payin a mechanic to replace the unit again .

Right so had a new turbo fitted again and also found my intercooler was buggered so replaced that to . I have normal boost now the only problem i have now is it giving a grey smoke out at low revs and its really anoying me as it wasnt this smokey before the turbo change . I give it a run to manchester yesterday which is a good 200mile round to try and clear and excess oil that might have leaked out the old turbo . But its still smokey at low revs any ideas what could b causing this ?

Decided to give my turbo a check yesterday as it has always whistled and all this talk gave me the hebby jebbies it was going to blow.

No play what so every in the turbine shaft, and minimal oil(what you'd expect to find) in the surrounding area. So dead on in my books

My theory is because I have a refurb, they used a turbine which maybe has a chip in it. Because the whole core was balanced anyway it doesn't pose a problem but it does catch the air different because of this defect hence the whistling.

Mine makes a simalar sound on my pd160 Cupra but I have sourced mine down to being the boost pipe that comes straight from the turbo has blown off and I ain't able to seal it just a throught for ya to may be cheak all ur boost pipes

Dont forget that you'll need to burn off the oil thats down the exhaust system, which will cause some extra smoke for a while.

I have tryed to give it a good run out the last few days , its boosting perfectly fine and drives great . Its just down low say in 4th doin low 1500 revs u get a light grey smoke trail behind , its at a certain point if u hold it where it starts smoking it can get worse . I was wondering if it could be the maf as I've jus noticed it has a slight crack in the circular tubing bit not the connector . Another thing got me thinking was the oil i got suppied it was from a vw specialist parts place in birmingham called tps . It was 0/30 and im sure that aint the right oil . Any help gratefully appreciated

Bit of a update . Well been driving the car for a few days now and i still get grey blue smokey at low revs . Yesterday i decided to change maf as it was cracked , what a nightmare . I brought the first one off car spares in brum 44 quid got it home and it was completely different so bk to them for a exchange but they dnt do the one i need so refunded . When euro car part and had the option of the cheaper "but just as good as the bosch one" well so the sales man said . Gets it home bearing in mind iv travel 20 odd miles by now. Fit the part , started it and it was idling all over the shop and really bad smoke out the bk . Phoned euro and explained what was happening , the sales man turns around and says "well that what u get for buying cheap " . Well for a start i told him this was recommened by ur salesman and he said because i ftted it i would struggle to get a refund . How do i know its faulty with out trying it u &#ckin moron was my reply and had abit of a uproar on the phone . He said he would exchange for bosch one but it was 110 quid . So after abit of searching again gsf could supply the original o/e maf for 75quid and have to give them my old one as well so got a refund again and went gsf .as u can prob tell this took the good part of the day and i wasnt in a good mood anyway . Fitted maf and no rough idle so take her out for a spin . Still smokey if not worse and now the smoke smells like burning so took it to a local mechanic not the one who fitted my turbo . He reved the car and a woosh of smoke came out he smelt it and said it was turbo Aaaaaahhhhh. This car is really pi#*in me of and i wish i kept my trusty mk1 cupra. So phone the turbo guy and he is gonna get his mechanic to take a look on monday .iv only owned the car 3 weeks and iv nearly spend a bag of sand on it. Please feel free to make me feel better about the car i always wanted and saved for for so long
