help, have done a search on here to no avail.

basically i have a 2002 leon tdi 90, but the turbo seems to be cutting out, the boost you feel just dissapears.... if i turn the engine off and reboot its back, until i take the revs over 3500 then i lose it again? anyone else had this?

cheers in advance...:shrug::shrug::headhurt:

Might be your MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow sensor) mate... get it on a VAGCOM if you can...

I had this with my 110 SE... Just no power at all... couldn't even do 30 mph... as soon as you go past 1600 rpm in 1st... all power gone, and it goes in limp mode.

The MAF sits just on the airbox, between the airbox and the intake.

VAG-COM is diagnostics software. Plugs into the little port in front of the gear stick on the dash.

Reports error codes etc, also allows you to take readings from sensors, and tell you how well your car is performing or under performing.

You can buy fake versions off eBay for your laptop with a USB cable.

VAG is like the range of cars that is mainly controlled by the VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat/Porsche group that use this serial diagnostics/tuning thing.

(I may have that all wrong tho...) ;)

At this point it becomes important to know exactly which engine you have, and also how many miles it's done.

The 2002 car could have AGR or ALH.

AGR has a wastegate turbo, like my old Ibiza TDI 90, and in this case I'd look to the EGR valve sticking open - I encountered this problem.

All TDI engines as delivered have a built-in shortcoming which results in the inlet becoming gradually choked with spongy crud. The crankcase breather puts oily vapour into the inlet and the EGR valve allows hot sooty exhaust into the inlet - so downstream of the EGR you get a buildup of partly burned oil+soot. Eventually (this is why I asked how many miles it had done) the sludge builds up so much that the EGR valve starts to stick.

EGR is supposed to open at part throttle and close again as you approach full throttle. When it sticks, the exhaust pressure leaking through eventually overpressures the inlet, causing the engine to drop into limp mode.

The cure is to take off the EGR and inlet manifold and clean them out.

The ALH engine, though, is a software-limited version of the TDI 110 engine (ASV, AHF etc) which has a variable-geometry turbo and no wastegate. In these engines the most likely failure is the variable-geometry vanes in the exhaust turbine sooting up and becoming sticky. This is more likely if the car is mainly used for town driving as the turbo doesn't get hot enough to burn off the soot and it accumulates. ALH is vulnerable to the EGR problem too, but the manifold geometry is different and that may be enough to reduce its severity.

There is a sticker, in your service book and also under the carpet or in the spare wheel well in the boot. Should look a bit like this.

Build_Sticker_Owner_Manual.jpg

The car that this sticker refers to has a BAP engine and FGE gearbox (and is a Phaeton and definitely not mine :)

The engine number is also stamped along the edge of the block, where it joins the clutch bellhousing. The location is indicated below - my car has an ASV diesel engine, yours might look a bit different.

Here it is in close-up

Here I've over-exposed the same shot to show the details in the shadow.

The engine number is also on a sticker on the timing belt cover, but this is partly hidden by the engine cover.

Umm interesting ive had a similar problem 3500 revs in 3rd gear then kpow no more power, i might be jumping in my engine is an asv 110 tdi and the cause was Turbo clean £450 done at the dealer.
I am hoping yours might be the EGR valve as mentioned before depends how many miles your vehicle has done mine was around 50 - 51,000 miles seems a common problem...

i had this exact same problem mate. the seat garage changed a valve (they saud it was in/around my intercooler) some sort of pressure valve, or so i thought until one of the lads on here corrected me, but was to busy listening to when i could get my car back. but they changed some sort of valve, took about an hour to do, and my car's been fine since.

I have a 2003 alh engined tdi leon which is predominantly used for town driving and has similar symptoms. Anyone know if the only way to overcome this is to replace or rebuild the turbo or is there some cleaning process which can be tried to clear the veins as mentioned above . . .

Other half had a Golf mk4 90Bhp TDI and this suffered limp mode - Gave it a couple of Italian Tune ups

Basically I found a good Steep Long Climb and kept the car in 2nd or 3rd gear from the bottom to the top a couple of time and added Millers Oils - Diesel Power Eco Max to every tank

Never had the problem again cleaned the turbo out without any work

I run Millers Oils - Diesel Power Eco Max in my Leon TDI and once a Month boot mine up the hill.

Just check on Google maps stretch of road I use is 2.4 Miles of up hill.

Hope this helps - Not taking the blame if you break anything!!!
