Leons to avoid....

Just had a bit of a brainfart that I thought I'd share with the class...

As there have been a few recent posts about people crashing and/or writing off their cars, it made me think that there must be quite a few cars out there that have been written off and repaired and re-registered, or had major work done to them after an accident, or have been stolen, or anything else bad happen to them. Unfortunately it's inevitable that some of these cars will have made it back on to the roads either with or without the original owners knowing about it.

So why not create a sticky thread with details of any such cars that people have owned, seen or nearly bought so any potential buyers that come to this forum know exactly what they are looking at?

It's just an idea that I thought I'd put out there... so feel free to shout it down or rubbish it. No harm in trying though :)

What do you all think?

I agree with this one, not all are registered when crashed and written off.

Same as if you crashed and have the repairs discussed up front might even help knock your value up a wee bit :)

My leon is an ex write off, that o brought and had repaired, it was in a right old state when i got it, but having spent years as an insurance engineer and having a mate with a bodyshop it was repaired correctly and i have 100% trust in the car.

All i say to this thread is just because a car has been damaged don't run it down totally, you would be shocked if you see some of the damage caused to cars on the production line that is bodged back together and sent out to the dealers!

That's a fair comment and this idea wasn't to warn people away from buying such cars, just to make them aware of what they are buying. As we all know, car dealers are all too happy to 'forget' to tell people certain facts that may prove to be very important so any chance to find the truth out is worth looking at.

But you bought it knowing it was a cat recorded, crash repaired car right? So you paid a lower price because of this. It's the dealers who pass of these cars without declaring it that I'm referring to.

Sorry guys, you can't just keep a list of vehicles which you suspect have been in an accident, or know has been in an accident with out the owners consent. It would be a serious breach of data protection and they could shut the entire site down. The Police cannot even tell an owner that their car has been in a serious accident!

Sorry but that's tosh. This idea has been used on other forums for a damn long time for the same reasons as I mentioned. FFOC used it when the RS and ST Focus were still reasonably new and trashed ones were appearing.

There is absolutely no reason why somebody cannot post 'I owned this car, reg number xxxx xxx and it was written off on this date for this reason'

Rob you are correct that you can write about a car that you personally have owned. You cannot write about a car that you think is a "dog" and say it is a dog unless you are a professional vehicle inspector.

So your telling me I cant say the car I went to see on saturday after travelling 400 miles was a dog? - should I say not as described - or wasnt quite what I was expecting??

Surely as consumers we have the right to discuss products between ourselves, if only in our own unqualified opinion, any pontential consumer of said product is then armed with others "opinions" - but they still have the right to make their own minds up surely.

If I saw a LCR that was in a prang on here and fixed to a high standard, then it would actually encourage me to see the car.

Not when your unqualified comments cause someone a financial loss because of your litigious comments. Thus rendering the hosts (us) responsible for their loss.

When you buy 2nd hand, you should always buy with your eyes open, not your wallet.

Sorry you posted some advice on a worthwhile thread Rob started saying the forum was held to ransom if a seller said someone on here had caused financial loss by making statements they werent qualified to make.

I didnt know that and the reason I said feel free to remove it was in case the thread was actually going to cause you problems - if its not it should be left alone to forewarn anyone else going to see the car.

maybe I should of said should I remove the other thread - I didnt mean to cause any problems and have altered the other thread.
