Lights for driving, have read all threads and do not understand if this means headlights auto dip when vehicle approahs

Depends if you have main beam assist or not.

Generally Auto means auto dipped beam and then the high beam is manual.

Some cars have main beam assist so just put lights in auto and main beam on and they will dip of their own accord when required

More specifically, usually Auto is “Automatically turn on dip beam headlights when it gets dark”, the level of “dark” can be set to high, medium or low, high meaning they turn on sooner than low. The main beam assist, if fitted, defaults to having high beam on, and will dip when approaching another car.

Auto on the rotary light switch means they come on when it gets dark, in dipped beam.

If your car has high beam assist, when you push the column stalk to put on high beam, you will see an A in the main beam symbol, the lights will then automatically dip when a car approaches.

Not all Leon's have high beam assist, only Excellence models I think.
