Longlife Oil?

This is driving me round the bend at the moment with differing opinions...

I have a 2002 (old shape) Leon Cupra 1.8T ... the word 'service' is flashing at me when I start the car so need a service.

Now some people say its on 'variable' service ... some say 'fixed' ... now apparently if on variable then should be using long life oil...

Thing is I'm not sure which my car is therefore unsure what oil I should be using for the service...

GSF reckon a decent 5W 40 synthetic will be fine ... £17+ VAT ... yet others reckon it needs long life 5W 30 which is around £50 ...

So which is it?!!!

I personally use castrol edge which isn't long-life; but mine is serviced every 10k, and I do an intermediate oil change when I have the time at 5k. I'm not sure how variable service intervals work; or how long-life oils work; but I know some manufacturers now claim 20k before first service which seems like madness; however profit making for them when engines go pop after the warranty runs out...
I'd say use a quality branded oil - shell/castrol etc. and service it regularly - just my 2 cents.

yes my service light is flashing at me too, i'm going to get some castrol edge soon. i've had a few turbo's cars before and done oil changes every 3k - 4k just to help prolong the engine and turbo's life. IMO it may cost a bit more but buy decent quality oil and change regularly. Its better than having to do some major repair work because of cheap oil or long service intervals

^^^What he said
I use Miller's XF Long life and do 6,000 mile services. I don't mind the extra cost to give me the confidence and extra protection. I drive my car quite hard at time this is why I choose this intervals with this oil. If you drive normally then use a good standard oil at 10,000 mile intervals.

Castrol edge 5w30 is vag specific for variable servicing anyway if your car is on variable

Thats what I thought too...

Thing is I now use the Cupra as a workhorse - its covering alot of miles so 5-6k services are no good to me... I'd be servicing more often than driving it... :D

So I want to stick to 10k intervals and want the necessary oil to do the job...

According to the service book it had Comma fully synth 5W 30 put in it ...

Castol Edge will last 10k easily; or possibly try a millers longlife - millers oil are normally second to none :)

whats the difference between variable and fixed?

in terms of oil its done at all services which on the leon is every 10,000 miles..

Many will do interim oil changes.

I thought variable was based on the vehicles driving conditions and hence service intervals of up to 20k miles possible?

Well if the oil is getting changed every 10k then can I use 5W 40 instead?

I'm a big fan of Silkolene Pro S which is 5W 40 and fully syth... happen to have 5L in my garage too from running it in my old 300bhp 200sx :D

Tell me about it... still cant make my mind up now...

Ive been looking at 0W 40 oil as well as provides better cold start protection and flows better @ 100degC than 5W 30 oil (correct me if I'm wrong) and is no more expensive that any 5W 30 oil...

Longlife is actually for up to 50,000KM so I'm informed therefore whether the oil is longlife or not doesnt matter if your changing every 10k miles... a decent fully synth thats 0W 40, 5W 30 or 5W 40 is fine...

Which means I can use that Silkolene Pro S after all ... :) - although I need to buy some more as only got 3.5 litres...

Tempted by the castrol edge as Halfrauds throwing in free screwdriver set (PRO) with every purchase of castrol edge (4L) but it costs nearly £60 with the extra 1L bottle you need...

Mobil 1 0w 40 is also ok for LCR - 5lts for around £40.I think supplying oil in 4lt containers is a con,you have to buy another 1lt bottle to do an oil change and most of them rip you off for the 1 lt bottles.
Thats why i go for 0w-40,it comes in 5lts and the lower viscosity at low temps is good too.
