Hi guys,

i'm new here so bear with me :) I bought a 1.8i cupra r turbo 20v last september and it's been fine until recently it just chugs when you start it up(like the engine is going to cut out), and when you are not accelerating. Now i've been to my local garage a few times and had the AA out to look at it but apparently they can't seem to find the problem. The guy in the garage change the engine thermostat and that seemed to stop it but he's changed that part 3.... yes 3 times and it still has this same problem. have any of you guys had this problem at all? if so what did you do? i'm thinking of taking it to a seat dealership but I just know it's going to be really expensive

Okay also, might sound a little odd but the little silver 2 from the ''20v'' on the back of the car seems to have disappeared so i'm left with ''0v'' if you see what I mean, I'm unable to post pics at the moment. I'm unable to find a replacement on the internet without buying the whole boot cover

Anyway.. if anyone could help me with this i'd be very greatful :) thankyou in advance

Jodie

Do you get a sulphurus eggy smell? If so, you have a misfire, classic sign of a dodgy coilpack.

Only about 30 quid new, theres four of them.

Either that, or it's a coolant temperature sensor. Can't see how a thermostat would fix it TBH.

if it's fine after it's warmed up for a few mins, could it not be the secondary air pump leaking? Does it sound like a hoover is running when you first start the car? When it's cool and i first start mine, it can be sluggish and splutters whilst the secondary air pump is running but as soon as it's done it's thing, the car returns to normal. My pump has split (rivets fail over time) so i need to either repair it or rip it out.

Could be worth a throttle body clean, I had a funny spluttering when I was idling/starting etc which was ok when accelerating, but then returned when I came to a stop, traffic lights etc.

The clean and reset sorted it out.

From the other responses though I've perhaps misinterpreted your symptoms! Does it sound anything like what I've described on this thread?
