my car has started smoking a lot, and will not boost above 0 PSI. at first i thought internals, but with the help of Philw it now looks its my turbo as theres a fair bit of oil in the outlet, and today i removed the intake and there doesnt seem to be any play in the shaft, but again there is oil, and i tried to spin the shaft and its very stiff.
Just wondering what everyone elses thoughts are and if it is the turbo, wheres he best place to get a new one? saw one on ebay from japan for £700 delivered but the outlet seems to be facing the wrong way?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i havent driven her now for 3 weeks and am really missin drivin her:(

cheers,
josh

Its a specialist thing mate as it will need to be balanced properly.

CR Turbos have a good rep with prices and there work acording to people on here who have used them clicky.

VF34 bearings are a sealed unit as far as I know. You need a new CHRA or complete new turbo.

But what made it fail in the first place? No point fitting a new one if it's going to happen again.

ah right, thats why ive never heard of it lol. CHRA??
Also is the IHI modified to fit the 1.8T as the brand new one ive seen seems to have the outlet facing the wrong way.

Yep, the turbo needs "clocking" to fit on the 1.8T assuming you have the usual underslung mani. it's a fairly straightforward thing to do though as the compressor housing on a genuine IHI should have some spare bosses on it to allow the actuator to be re-fitted to the housing once it's been rotated.

rotate the housing to suit.
if you have been running >1.2bar sustained then its bearing failure like a lot of others.

overspool them and this happens.

CHRA = center housing rotating assembly. Basically the middle bit with the compressor and turbine removed.

18-19psi = 1.2-1.3 bar, which would be okay in my book.

I'd want to know if the fueling isn't getting lean on full throttle.

red housing internally, and possibly cracked. usually goes hand in hand with bearing failure.
overspooled, oil supply issue, or just plain unlucky perhaps.

IHI and bearing failures are common, usually when pushed >1.2bar

18-19psi is thats its max it ever goes to? it should'nt have done its bearings if that was all it has been seeing.

Yes, im pretty sure it doesnt go past that, although it is hard to check with it being in the centre console. It made 328BHP on powerstations rollers in Nov if that gives ou any idea?

it has been running this turbo for around 2 1/2 years now so maybe it used to boost a bit more as ive only owned it for around 8 months.
The car has seemed to be running ok other than this, im goin to do a compression test tonight just to rule out internals.
so is everyone agreeing that its my turbo and should sort a new one?
If so where from? have also read a bit about the TD05 turbos, will it be bolt on for me and would it require mapping?

Cheers.

to save expense, if the rest of your setup is ok, is just get the turbo rebuilt (or replaced if its non repairable), and perhaps strengthened (360 thrust bearing for example) and then refit, instead of having to fit a different turbo.....which may or may not suit your map = extra cost possibly

ye thats what im planning, its just im asking about the TD05, as i have seen a few things on it and it seems that people think of it as a better/stronger turbo than the IHI and ive got the impressio that its a direct bolt on in place of an IHI, they also seem to be more available than the IHI and cheaper.

what sort of life expectancy do they have? as there is a few used ones on ebay for around £200. is it worth getting either bran new or rebuilding before fitting for peace of mind?
