Just thought I'd share this with everyone but i've found the solution to the booming noise in the boot.

In the spare wheel well there is 2 iPhone shaped holes that are right above the tailpipe and are open to the outside world. So I bought some cheap vibe dynamat type stuff from Halfrauds and covered them up. Result, much more family acceptable noise levels in the car now!

Anyone know what the holes are for and if it's ok to cover them up?!! They have a plastic louvre over them with a rubber flap type thing built in.

Be interested to know what they are for?!!

Can you get some pictures? I think I know what you mean, I think these flaps were cuasing lots of noise when sitting on the le-shuttle of all places

They let the air out of the car when you close the door. If you tape them up you will notice it becomes difficult to close the doors if the windows are not open. As you close the door you pressurise the inside of the car, the flaps let it out

yeah they are vents to let air escape when you close the door and cause a pressure difference. if you have these covered over, it 'could' cause a window to go pop!! unlikely, but not impossible !!

I've stripped my boot and then the flaps made an annoying (funnily enough) flapping noise. So I removed them but then noticed I got water in when washing the car. So I taped them up. Whenever I put the air con on full whack everyone's ears popped! couldn't work it out till I unmasked them and it stopped doing it.

So I'd recommend not covering them up!!!

Hmmmm for the difference they make to the noise levels in the car I'll take the risk I think. It's so much nicer for everyone else in the car! I miss the noise in fairness though!

Personally i would leave them open, as said its to compensate for the cabin pressure, letting air in and out etc.

You could however cover the inside of the plastic cover (The one that goes over the vents) in a material, maybey a strip of carpet? Just to dampen the sound, rather than seal up the vents.

If you had Dynamatted the boot / wheel well and then put some dense sponge over the slots would that have done a similar job without knackering the pressure release capability?

your passengers would rather have a drone in the cabin than not being able to have the blowers on due to constant ear popping! But if you wanna try it, try it. It varies from car to car, some are btter sealed than others... I know that when I blocked them off the noise of the air trying to escape through the door seals was much more irritating than a boomy exhaust.
I'd just get a resonator cut and shut back in... you're looking at around the same cost anyway...

Old golfs and polo's did not have vents which made the doors hard to close, also heard stories of perforated ear-drums especially kids!!!!! Wouldn't want to do that to mine!

I'm up there again tomorrow to talk to him about Downpipe and cat replacement pipe when he's doing my service! It's also being cleaned tomorrow as well by my mate so it's getting some love for a change!

If you open the window everytime you close the door you will be fine
