MK 1 Leon fr gearbox vibration

My 54 plate leon has developed a gearbox whine and i can feel a notchy vibration through the steering. The symptoms seem to be related more to the road speed rather than the revs that the engine is doing. I have also noticed that it does seem to fade away a bit with a little bit of left hand lock. The car has done 65k and i havnt really abused it....hope somebody has a solution........whitz end

Cheers..I have had the front wheels in the air and they spin freely enough and there is no heat in the front hubs when you check them after a run. I can only spin one wheel at a time and its in neutral so the gearbox in disengaged.......whitz end
