Mk 2 Ibiza accelerator problem?

We've just inherited a 12 year old 1.4 Seat Ibiza, which my partner intends to use whe she passes her test. It's been sat outside the house for some time now, so on Friday i decided to take it down to the local mechanic for a quick inspection before taking it for an I.T.V. (Spanish M.O.T. - i'm in Gran Canaria). When i started the car, without touching the accelerator, the engine started screaming at maximum revs. I've played with the accelerator pedal but nothing changes, it continues to sream at maximum revs.

For the life of me i can't see where the throttle cable enters the engine compartment. Anyone out there offer any advice to a mechanically challenged Seat owner?

Thanks in advance

Can you see inside the engine bay where the cable goes to the throttlebody ?

Is this stuck open ? could be whats causing the car to rev its nuts off when you start.

Usually at the top of the engine there should be a cable running to a bracket that is sort of semi circular in shape, the air filter will attach to the throttle body so if you can trace that back. but you should be able to move the metal semi circle bracket and it should be sprung loaded.

Do you have a haynes manual at all ?

This is what it looks like, but you would be looking from a different angle i think, Hope this helps

Thanks again, f17th.

I'll have a poke about later this evening.

Is it advisable to remove the air filter first?

No, i don't have a Haynes manual.

Help! how do i remove the air filter housing to get access to the throttle cable. I've removed the cover and filter but can't see how the housing is loosened. There's a propeller shaped kind of circlip and an orange plastic piece that resembles a rotor arm - do i need to remove these, if so how?

Again apologies for what must seem like pretty basic questions.

Thanks in advance.

i think thats the distributor cap youve taken off maybe?
you need to take the whole air box off the top of the engine, should be about 4-5 clips to hold the top on, then theres 3 bolts, that screw thru the air filter housing and then thru a metal tripod kind of thing, then it should just pull off. if there looks to be anything else holding it on just undo it.

I had the same problem.

The diagnosis - there was a cable that ran accross the top of my strut which sent info to the ECU or somewhere. Anyway this had got caught with the bonnet being closed and had nipped the wire and was unable to send the info etc ect.

The garage charged me 15 pounds and all is good.

Sweet.
