Early days yet. And with the Cupra being so new, I'd hope not many people stupid enough to film street racing would own one.
And I doubt Seat would make such a video, just in case their latest greatest car gets shown a clean pair of heels (not likely, I know). Plus it might devalue the Cupra R, which isn't good for them either.
So really you're waiting for a magazine or TV show to come up with that idea.

good point, was only released a few weeks ago or so i suppose, i cant see there being that much difference, not forgetting the cupra r looks 10x times better than the new cupra, whats with the that curvy line down the side! lets hope those boys on top gear try it next season

My thought is that the 2.0 FSi will prove the greater of the two. Performance figures and times are superior on the Mk2. Simple as that.
I don't think the Mk2 Cupra looks different enough from the Mk2 FR and other sporty models. I'd prefer to see some v. loud styling... befitting the flag-ship Leon from a very well respected hothatch manufacturer.
The Cupra-R was a visual riot compared to the Mk2 Leon Cupra. Jesus.. even my standard 180BHP Mak1 Face-lift looks meaner than the Mk2 LC!

Looks aside, I think the Mk2 Cupra has it in the bag. The power has gone up, the suspension has been revised but the weight is similar.
I hear that you dont get even get a spoiler on the the CUPRA, you have to pay extra cos apparently a big man a seat thinks people don't like aggressive styling, thats half the reason why people buy hot hatches, that and performance, you wouldn't buy a standard looking fiat panda just cos it had 200bhp ! think he better get a new job at HYUNDAI or something
Hothatches is the class I've been buying in for the last three years. Why? Because they provide the performance and fun that I need, along with loud/over-stated styling and the general space/practicality you don't get from a coupe.
If I'm in the marking for a £20,000 hot hatch, it better sodding well have 18 inch rims, skirts, a well fitted bodykit (as much for looks as for aerodynamics) and if needs be, a spoiler and vents! It's part and parcel.

I don't think there would be quite that much in it, but a good car length for sure. You need quite a big jump in power to make that sort of difference.
I do agree with you however I am thinking because the new cupra can put power down better it would make a big difference.
watching the seats race at rockingham the mk11 left them standing in a straight line,no match at all.

i think we're all on the same wave length here, yes the new cupra maybe quicker and a better performing car but i wouldn't trade my cupra r for it, i'd much rather have the better looking car for a few car lengths, theres no point in mentioning chipped cars cos both can be chipped so toosha in that department, theres no doubt the new cupra has it cut in the performance department but im sorry, i just cant get over the looks!

I'm still not convinced, I know everyone gets excited about new models and an extra 15ps of power (wow) but it is a heavier car so I can't see it pulling much on a LCR if anything at all. It would be like saying the 225 LCR is quicker than the 210 LCR.
It would be interesting to see lap times of both, so far I think the top gear track is the only one with times and the mk2 cupra was actually a few hundredths slower. I know its nothing really conclusive but there might be a bit of fight left in the old dog yet

the reason why the mk2 race cars were leaving the mk one's behind is because they were specifically designed the mk1's were not.
1.mk2 has dsg paddle shift and 300bhp
2.mk1 is only slightly tuned to 250bhp and straight manual
so there is going to be a obviouse straight line difference which is not going to the same on the road as its only 15bhp different and both manual gearbox,although paddle shift will be available.
and i think we are all agreed the mk1 is the bette looking car!
