Ive found a decent mk2 16v but the gear box needs replacing.

What options are there for a replacement? and how would be it affect performance if say i used an 8v box?

Not 100% sure but im sure the 16v uses cable shift and 8v rod in their gearboxes. So dont think you'd be able to use an 8v one for the 16v (i think)

my gearbox is racked off big time, and its only done 27000, ill be double clutching all the god damn gears by the time i hit 30000...

as for info regarding the thread.. i have no idea :D

Do a search and you will find a lot of people saying to keep the 16v gearbox (02A) and then changing the finial drive to 3.94 which will give a closer ratio box and once it's all apart might as well fit an LSD at the same time.

When you say "mk2 16v" are we talking a 2.0 16v (02A 'box, cable change) or 1.8 16v (020 'box, rod change)?

The good news is that both are VAG staples so finding something that will fit shouldn't be too much of a problem. The bad news is that there's an awful lot of different sets of ratios, each of which has a different gearbox code. The set of ratios is model/year/application specific, and fitting a different set of ratios can make a hell of a difference to the way a car drives. Sometimes that's a good thing. Sometimes it's not.

i think i will, 3rd has always been a problem when giving it welly, but tonight racing a impreza 2L turbo it refused 2nd! i dont wanna change the pedal box ive read all the threads about how much of a bitch it is !

Dolly - is yours an 8v? I've got an ongoing issue with 2nd on mine, in which it won't go down into 2nd with any left lock on (really useful when approaching roundabouts). I'm led to believe this is indicative of a bent selector fork, meaning a 'box rebuild or replacement.

Either way, it's in better shape than the box on my Alfa. Clean shifts down to 2nd rarely happen when the 'box is cold (even with throttle blipping double decluch shenanigans) , and it's not mad keen on being hurried when it's warm. The gearing is rather lower in that so 3rd gear gives options. 2nd is much better for going round roundabouts sideways tho! :)

thats how exactly how mine started - sorry

clicky piccies click next for my own take on a modification design

my old 8v was fine, 3rd was the only gear i missed on the odd occasion, my 16v is a million times worse, and because ive gone from the 8v Rod, to the 16v's cable, it simply feels crap!

i looked at the pics, is the first one i look at the pedal box? without having one out or even having a look at mine i dont really get wot the modification is.
