i thought about doing it to my mk2 but once i read up on it i found out problems such as the engine puts the whole cars weight balance out so its front end heavy which means lots of suspension and brake problems

its more to do with where the engine sits in the engine bay coz if you look it sits quite far back and to right so a heavier engine would put the balance out
I have built both a VR6 Ibiza and a 20VT ibiza. Both into Mk2s.
If doing the Vr6, use the full subframes and widetrack suspension from the VR6, then it handles awesome. I reckon its b0llox about it handling rubbish. I`d use an early wiring loom with no coded key and plug it straight into your fusebox.
The 20VT I`d use a SEAT engine, or something front wheel drive. You`d need the full coded key setup or use the QPENG stuff, which is great.
They are very different cars to drive, the VR6 in a tiny car feels like a balls out racecar all the time. the 20VT can be driven sensibly or like a lunatic.
Should be easier to get parts in the Uk, spare a thought for us blokes doing it hard down under with bugger all parts and local knowledge.

must add to this now as i have experience of both a mk2 vr6 and my girlfriend has now owned her mk3 210bhp cupra for a few months. I personally find the vr6 a much more fun car to drive and i am really gonna miss it when i sell it! I wouldnt say the cupra handles any better either, but saying that i have never been very impressed with the handling of any of the ibiza's ive drove or owned.
Obviously other people will feel differently but this is why we have forums etc, but after driving both cars i wouldn't feel the hassel of putting a 20vt in a mk2 was worth it as you can just buy a mk3 and there getting cheeper and cheeper now adays. however the vr6 is massive amounts of fun and i havent regretted putting that engine in once!

If you were to convert it to a VR6, I would go with the most powerful motor that you can find (R32), though, the added weight will make the car drive a little different, not as nimble. Personally, I would build the 1.8T up to a 2.0 and add a big turbo. With the ability to make 400+ streetable and massive 600+ (done here in the States), you would find the added power more than enough to stick with the 4 cylinder.

i think that the VR6 would be a better sounding engine and havent really scene it done myself but as for tuning potential surely the 1.8t would be better than the VR. But at the end of the day mate its your car you have to drive it everyday so the choice really is up to you no matter what anyone else thinks.
