It's time for me to change the cambelt on my 02 Ibiza PD100. I have done a cambelt replacement before so I thought I'd do it myself. Has anyone got a guide on the 1.9tdi PD?? I have seen guides on the petrol engines but I thought the diesel would be different?
Thanks for the quick reply. Yea it looks to be a big enough job. By the time the special tools where purchased it would nearly be the same price to pay a garage!!
Better to pay them for the initial job than pay them to rectify a mistake in my opinion.
pd belts are very easy in comparrison to others but for those with little experience its a job best left to the professionals.
its a very long-winded guide but details are always good. some of it is irrelavent as its based on a golf not a polo/ibiza/fabia which share the same chassis/running gear and are different to the golf mk4 platform (which the mk1 leon uses), some of the work carried out in the guide is also unnessesary.
Still if you've gotta buy the tools and the belt the costs soon add up to at least 1/2 of what a dealer would charge you. And after the swearing and wasted time you'll wish you paid the dealer to do it. I did my non pd timing belt and they're even more annoying but I plan on keeping my car through a couple of cam belt changes.
well you can buy the tools (only the timing tools) for about £40, then you'll need the appropriate spanners, sockets, axle stands, jack etc which can cost £100s
then the belt kit average cost wise will be £150 (for belt, tensioner, roller, water pump, coolant)
then you've got to find time to do it.
The garage who i work for are a vag specialist (christ knows theres enough about these days) and charge £250 all in for a belt swap with the full kit including water pump and all that listed above.
So as you've said mate - sometimes its just not worth the hassle.
It's not the experiance I'm worried about. I'm a bike mechanic by trade and well used to doing belts on ducati's. Cars are a different ball game altogether and I am aware of that. But just thinking by the time I get the tools and a night to do it I'd be better off paying someone else to worry about it!!
