As an FR TDi owner I say BUY ONE, you will not be dissapointed. I was going to buy the 1.6TDi and took it for a test drive....that was enough to make me spend the extra on the FR TDi. A great engine with serious real world performance.

My Dad has just got 70mpg on his 2.0tdi!

If you are wanting MPG plus some performance get the FR.

If you are wanting MPG or high 30's Low 40's and a quick car go for the Cupra.

However, the 1.2 TSI sounds like a good option too. A quick remap and hitting some decent figures for a 1.2 and it will be good on fuel.

I do miss my MK4 Fr TDI and Leon 2.0TDI, but 1.4 TSI engine is Truly Awesome for power and economy combined.

I've just gone from a 240bhp Leon Cupra to an Ibiza FR 2.0 tdi & was blown away by the fuel consumption.
My 20 mile trip to work in the Cupra was averaging 25-30mpg & the Ibiza does about 55-63mpg!
I've lost 100bhp but the Beezer still has plenty of poke around towns & B roads & handles SO much better like a little go kart! But like a previous post mentions, you have to think about the overtaking as opposed to taking it for granted.
The return on mpg, tax & insurance makes it worth while & it drives so much better than the Cupra - something I never thought possible. I'm starting to love it!

I get about 300 miles per tank in my tsi

Mine has done 340 miles and still has over a 1/4 tank left including the 2 days to de-ice this week (rear window heater, air con and headlights don't help MPG), but then my driving is a pretty steady 70 on the mway to work.

Nightflight, Maybe about time for a DPF regen or I guess you may have more start stop driving or you have a heavier right foot ;-)

I've had my 1.6 Tdi for 10 months now, covering 11,000 miles. I can sum up the time with the following:

Meh...

The thing is, it's a very calm, polite little car. I bought it because I wanted the following:

  • A great looking car
  • A low insurance group
  • Good MPG
  • Some power

The car itself is, in my opinion, the best looking hatchback (ignoring the Megan Sport anyway) on the road at the moment. It's incredibly cheap on insurance (group 4 if I recall correctly) and the aim is to keep it until I'm 25 (23 at the moment) and get a mad car when I hit that magic age.

The car is disappointing on MPG. I get 48-55 MPG on my 20 mile each way commute, and that travelling at 55-60 (I gave up speeding about March time as you never get anywhere quickly on my commute). I generally get 450 miles to the tank.

In regards to power, it's not that fast off the mark. About 10.5 seconds to 60 (2 seconds slower than my last car). The thing is though, it's deceptively quick in higher gears. 40-70 in third is pretty rapid. 4th gear has a good amount of torque for overtaking grannys going 50 in a 60. But like someone else has said, it does require planning. It probably takes about 2 seconds with your foot down for the turbo to kick you past the car in front.

I recently had a 2.0l Leon Sport as a courtesy car and that was awesome. It still got 40-45 to the gallon and I was hammering it.

So, if I were you I'd get the 2.0l Tdi if you can afford the insurance. If you can't afford the insurance then the 1.6 will suffice, but I wouldn't recommend one.

I find fuel economy to be decent in the 1.4 if you don't exceed 65ish, after that it'll need an extra cog to maintain the figures. It's what i expected though tbh, and wud rather the sound of a lil twin cam petrol engine than a diesel thats a 'bit' quicker in the case of the 1.6.

I'd go TSI mate, as with the 7 speed and extra grunt its both hugely economical and quick when you want. Funnily enough for me insuring a cupra was cheaper than an FR TDI (by some 150quid!)

Oddly as well i find the power delivery in the 1.4 to be strange...at times it feels very responsive and poky in the mid range, and other times feels very flat. I gave it a good run earlier, flat out to 105ish, then to the redline in every gear till i hit 90. After than the response was back again and i cud 'feel' the acceleration. It's weird. But fundamentally you have to change down from 5th to 4th on a motorway because it is a slow car :(

Exactly hit the nail on the head there mate, just feels a lot slower than all my other 1.4 engine cars :( shame as the look of the car is perfect for me

Lol I'm working out cash tomorrow and what I can afford.........

.....don't think I will be able to change as quick as I'd like but the saving starts now!

I won't be changing for two years :( lol

I went to Blackpool yesterday, some 125 miles from where i live. On the way back i wasn't hanging around averaged a poor 31.7mpg  BUT, after getting off the M6 the car felt awesome, so much more punch than usual. If you find yours a little flat at times like me, give it a LONG motorway drive, seems to do the trick lol

i love my 1.6tdi

its great on fuel its a little rocket round the streets and on a motorway you get to 70mph press cruise and you get about 50mpg not amazing but god enough! drop to 65 and you get 55 drop to 60 and you can get 65mpg!

remap it for more power if needed too?

I'd agree power delivery from the 1.4 BXW lump is poor in the new Ibiza. I have knocked around town with that engine in the Ibiza and Altea and can honestly say it feels more responsive in the bigger car! Mind you, it's not going to be anyone's engine of choice for the motorway, is it?

nope! really isn't, i wonder if it's the map you know...mite be worth getting it reflashed or something

Looked into it a little, with a cat back stainless steel system, better intake piping and a Revo map it might make 95-98bhp but it's still not a lot for the money

That sounds like a lot of money for very little gain, i'd leave it and save the money towards whatever you decide to go for................get the TDi FR ;)

mate of mine had a grande punto sporting 16v, looked like this:

Standard power is 95hp and it ran 96hp on the rollers, after a custom CAI it ran 106hp, sounded amazing but it still didn't feel quick, imo all mods to small engines is a bit of a waste really considering you can remap say a mk5 cupra for £400 and gain 40hp, spend the same on a 1.4 and you might gain 10hp...lol

If it were me, having driven both, Id have the FR TDi if i could afford the insurance it gets better mpg and you barely have to put any effort into it. The 1.6tdi lacks low down power although a map may sort this? The 1.6 is a great engine once you get it higher up the revs but the fuel isnt near as good as the 2.0 :)

If you fancy a 5 dr FR give me a shout :)

If you mean your white one mate I'd love it but I couldn't afford it at the mo :p
