You could get an over centre switch fitted. For those who don't know about old HGVs basically it was officially for starting and worked by "flooding" the engine with fuel but as DERV still burns when massively over rich (not that there is a stoichiometric ratio) and the additional fuel chemically ramped up the compression ratio (this aided starting as the more you compress a gas the hotter it gets). Now when drivers got to steep hills that caused them trouble they flicked the switch and used the higher compression ratio to give more power.

Ok so filling up was a lot cheaper back then, but a water injection system will do the same job as well as cooling the incoming air and water is relativity cheap.
