Mouldy Bonnet Insulation

I have read all of the posts here about this issue but it seems to be quite complicated sorting it out with differing accounts of how well it can even work.
This coupled with the fact that I'm out of warranty (07 plate) and also that I'm not exactly much of a mechanic makes me wonder 'Would it really be that bad to just leave it'?

It doesn't look great but I don't want to have to keep shelling out for new insulation all the time as it seems that the problem is not going to get better. I wonder how long I could leave it.

I took it to a garage to get someone to have a look but he reckoned that it is no big deal and not really worth worrying about. True?
 
I wouldn't bother. I got mine replaced under warranty and it's started going mouldy again because their 'fix' doesn't work! So i've taken mine out, i'll put it back in when i trade it in. For my car (1.2tsi) it's no noisier inside the car, and i couldn't care less about the outside!
 
I wondered what the purpose of that lining being there was? It's not like it's super duper thick stuff is it.
 
The bonnet insulation will deaden the engine sound to a small extent, it can also protect the bonnet from the heat of the engine, the extra heat certainly wouldn't do the paintwork any good over time.

There's a few potential problems with leaving the leak unchecked. Water is leaking through the bonnet and dripping into the engine bay. The bonnet insulation soaks it up and goes mouldy. It can easily get saturated (especially with our weather), it will sag and rest on the engine and the water will go through it. Removing the insulation just makes it easier for the water to reach the engine. Not sure about diesels but for petrol engines, the battery, fuse box and MAF sensor get exposed to the water. Even if the engine cover is in place, the coilpacks can also be affected, there are numerous comments on here about corroded coilpacks.
 
Well, I think what I'll do is replace it and wait for that one to start getting manky. Then replace that at a later date. Ridiculous really.
 
I can imagine my ecomotive getting slightly hotter due to the closed front grille.
 
I haven't had my insulation on for about 50k miles, no problems.

One thing to note is that the underside of my bonnet has muddy water marks from all the puddles I've driven through this summer, so even if you stop the water coming from above, it can still get up from below.
 
There is something on the back of the engine (can’t remember what it’s called) that gets damaged with the ingress of water. Seat will tell you it’s (The Engine) a wet area!
 
I took mine out as it was moldy, cleaned it and then spray painted it with black paint. Came out really nice. Went moldy a few months later so I took it out all together. The car sounds better/louder, can hear my dump valve more and also the induction kit. Not noticed any issues with my paintwork on the bonnet.
 
Just wondering what's the longest period that anyone has been without insulation in a mark II TFSI. The insulation is mouldy and hanging down and touching the top of the engine. I'm thinking that is probably more likely to do damage to the car than just removing it and going without.

As I say, the guy in the garage round the corner said it wouldn't be a problem. Might get a second opinion.
 
The soundproofing that they replaced mine with is miles thinner than what was in it before! It doesn't deaden the sound as much either. I'm not complaining, but when I looked at it I was like :shrug::blink:.

I think it's £40 or thereabouts to buy new soundproofing, so for what it's worth I'd leave it in, and if it's that bad when you come to selling up, just go buy a new one! :)
 
I have noticed this issue on my 57 plate FR TDI. The insulation is sagging to the point it is resting on the engine.
Took the car to the dealer as it came with a 1yr warranty (bought a few months ago). They acknowledged that it's a known issue but will not fix it under a used car warranty. They also advised the TPI does not apply to UK, only mainland Europe.
Wanted to charge £130+vat to fit the seal and new insulation.

I've written to SEAT UK to see what their stance on it is. If I don't get anywhere then I'll be removing it and going down the DIY fix route.

Ring SEAT UK (0500 222 222) & ask for Caroline.
Giver her the TPI and tell her it isn't the first instance you've heard of people being denied this warranty work.
She's very good, can't big her up enough. She'll get you sorted.

They're talking :censored: if they tell you it doesn't apply to the UK, that is 100% certain.

My replacement soundproofing has now been on 2 weeks, and there is mould around the edges already.:(:shrug:
On the same understanding, what's the point of a warranty if you can't make use of it? :)
