Right, I'm now on my second sound deadening due to the getting wet and mouldy.

This has also, I think, caused misfire issues on cylinder 1 due to the water and condensation build up.

Today I tried to stop the water getting through.

Parts:

Sound deadening - 1P0 863 831B
9x Clips - 6L6 853 575
waterproof tape- I used some good duck tape I have

Remove the plastic scuttle from the bonnet by opening the bonnet and removing the torx screw that run along the back of it. Unclip the scuttle at each end where it wraps round the bonnet. Use small long nose pliers to close the wings on the clips that hold the front edge of the scuttle down. Doesn't matter if you break any as you will have bought new ones using the part number above

You also have to pull apart the washer jet pipe at the drivers side.

Once its off clean the whole area and dry any water.

Now you can start to cover all the holes with bits of the tape. I put about 4 bits over each hole to stop the water getting through as much as I can. I also put it on the holes the clips go though to try and seal them more. Put a small incision in these ones to help the clip get through though.

I also taped the washer hole with plenty of tape.

There's a hole under the bonnet too.

I also put some draught excluder foam along the edge, but it was too think and stopped the scuttle seating properly. You can also see here I have taped the holes that the torx screws go though.

I took it off and used some of the stuff on the left instead. Forgot a pic though

When you fit the scuttle again, remember to connect the washer pipe before fitting the scuttle again!

Once you have fitted the scuttle, look underneath and help spread the wings of the plastic clips with a small flat driver. That will keep it nice and tight.

Finished!!

Will see how it helps over the winter.

This means if water does get into the area under the scuttle it will sit there till it flows out the rear with movement of the car. It shouldn't rust as water already collects in there to a certain extent I think. I think water will still get through the modified clips...but hopefully not as much.

Yesterday I put some of the below in the seal at the front edge of the plastic. The cold damp weather doesn't help with curing.

I'll keep putting some on when its dry to try and seal the edge properly.

You can get it on Amazon and eBay. - http://www.captaintolley.com/

This is a great write up, Cheers!

whilst mine is no way near as bad as yours, it is beginning to grow some friendly mould and sag! not having an engine cove, its a concern for my coil packs too! i will be leaving it over winter and getting on with it in the new year, hopefully there will be a positive return from your technique!

I had the Seat fix which made mine worse than before.
Since then I removed the trim and taped all the holes in the bonnet to stop the water coming through. My insulation was already going mouldy so I aerosol sprayed the inside of it black let it dry and refitted it.
I'm now over a year on and my insulation still has no sign of mould or sagging.
When I open the bonnet after washing the water runs out of the back edge of the bonnet but apart from that it seems to work fine.
I was a little concerned about the water being trapped in there but thought it should be fine.
I'm going to remove my trim in the future to gloss wrap it so will see what it's like under there then

I had it taped up before, but not to the extent I've done it now. I'm hoping this should pretty much stop it.

The only thing I noticed was some water staining under the plastic, but you get that anyway even with the holes open as standard. It nice paint under there too.

Another thing I do if I open the bonnet when its wet, is do it very slowly, and throw a drying towel in to over the maf and cylinder 1 location. That way any water that does drip, gets soaked up by the towel.

If you look at my coil packs thread, you'll see the coil pack and rust on cylinder 1. ;)

I was poking around my engine bay earlier today and found mine with white spots. Worse though, was the same material that sits on the back wall of the engine bay behind the battery had a fair bit of wet/mould. Its the bit next to the reflective heat material.

i suggest you all have a look

Hopefully this works as according to SEAT, the reason my car is now broke is because of water leaking through the scuttle. Although its my fault as the sponge SOUNDPROOFING is meant to stop all the water that has leaked through the scuttle, getting on the engine, and I removed it. What a joke.

I think this is the worst drain hole in the matter. (The one taped over) My idea to fix this is to glue a small plastic 90-bend and connect a hose and route it so it drain in the front off the bonnet. It may be needing some cutting in felt to route the hose.

Hope you guys can make any sense of what i´m trying to explain. :)

So now you will have some water under plastic trim ... as drainage is blocked ...

I put a small cut it the tape with a craft knife and pushed the bolts and fixing through.

You do get water built up under the plastic scuttle, but it moves out when you drive. Or you can open the bonnet slowly and it runs out the back near the screen.

The paint under the scuttle is fine, so you shouldn't get any rust. I also waxed/sealed the paint while the scuttle was off.

Sound deadening on mine still looks fine. Some water will still seep through though I think.

Anyone know if just simply removing the sound deadening really makes much difference to noise in car?

Shouldn't do but it is there for a reason. Potentially you could damage the paint from the heat although I'm sure plenty of people are gonna argue with that. Plus if you don't fix the leak first there is nothing to soak up the water so it'll just end up all over the engine which isn't wise.

Noise is the same tbh, I removed mine recently. As its a diesel dont need to worry about water on coilpacks and water just runs off the engine cover. Only thing I have seen though is water does sit where the oil cap is. Thats all.
