Well, following CupraSteve's thread, I mod'd my airbox but as I couldn't be arsed to go to Worcester for the hose, I got some cheap metal stuff from B&Q thats 4 inches in diameter!!!!

Its very bendable but is too easy to break, squash etc, and as its so fat it does get a little squashed in places to about 3.5 inch and its not smooth.

Anyway, unlike steve, i didn't really get a decent increase in G/S (161-3 pre mod, 165 peak after).

BUT - I am still well impressed for 1 reason - I GOT MY TOP END BACK! as a few ppl with revo know, stg 1 for some (inc myself) won't pull past 135mph. Well now, it pulls easily past 140 and I backed off as my exit (on my private rd  ) was coming up. It had more in it!

Intake temps are down by 10 on same run from over the last 3 days but ambient temps were almost identical, timing needs to be retarded still as i'm seeing more 5-6.8's than i'd like but I don't have an SPS3 and hate lemmiwinks :(

But all in all if only for the top end, i'm keeping this mod. Induction improvements are the way forward for now!

PS, I found my daytime logs show higher G/S than evening even though its cooler later on:think: ?

On another note, I've logged back to back my pipercross panel filter and my std one and there is no difference in G/S.

Do any panel filters actually increase the airflow at all? Cuz mine don't!

yeah i found that stuffs easy to break, will do for now, you can always get the other hose at a later date.

Well thats the plan! What sort of figs did you get using this stuff?

i never used that stuff on the cupra, i used it on the 106gti i used to have, iv only got the results from the hose im using now, like you said that 4" stuffs a bit thick and doesnt go by the battery too well.

I stuck my hand over the intake on the end of the pipe near the bumper and got someone to rev it, itt almost sucked my hand up there lol

methinks that smooth hose makes a big difference - cuz i haven't seen a real increase in flow, just my topend has returned - which is good!

But when you did yours, even though the hose is smaller, you got a good increase! I don't think i'll ever fully understand these cars.

bigjode, has your car been remapped?

I used to see 163g/s with a CAI then swapped over to a smoothed airbox with 80mm cold air feed and saw an instant 180g/s+

Yeah its revo'd. I got exactly the same readings before the mod as after. Maybe the hose i used is a bit crap, its also not aimed through a grille but comes down just below the LCR splitter andis angled at about 45 degrees from the ground, towards the front of the car.

point it out the grill :) my advice wuld also be to drill a small drainage hole in the bottom of the airbox as mine sucks in water like no tomorrow

mine has one already. I blocked it up with some dynamat - don't ask - but i may unblock it!

Oh, b4 i forget,, what size is your hose? Evenproducts said they do 3" or 4", but no 3.5?

And cheers!

BTW Gary, I know you know your engines, what effect do highish CF's have on performance?

I'm getting very few 6.8's and nothing above. but 3's are regular in high revs, and 4.5's. Was wandering if i RETARD the timing a bit with an SPS3 what effect on performance should I see;

1. less performance because timing is retarded,

or

2. increased performance because there will be less pinking and less correction, bearing in mind the car corrects the timing so it never pinks for longer than a millisecond anyway?

again its the same as that alloy stuff oyu can buy from B and Q but black, it falls apart.

I tried every single variant of flexible tin, alloy hose from everywhere on my 106, the heat got to them all and eventually fell apart. Saying that the black stuff from Green did outlast some o the other stuff i tried

Finally, a result - I got the hose and aimed it out where my fog should be (no fog) and voila - 173g/s peak! Well impressed.

Also, out of curiosity, I borrowed a BMC and cold air feed - logged it multiple times with and without the cold air feed attatched and never saw above 164G/S which is the same as my std airbox before even modding it!

£170 ish for a nice noise is not funny! :-o

I will miss the Darth Vader Dump though! It sounded wicked. ssssssssssssssssssss------TTSSHHHHH!

Using the age old g/s * 1.31, it makes my car about 226bhp and yours Steve about 235bhp! (Going by your 180 peak figure)

I don't know how you feel about that Steve but I find it hard to believe my car is putting that out with only Revo st1 and a modd'd airbox! Is that possible?

Although any figure really is just "pub talk" isn't it? I wouldn't mind a drag race against a new ST though. That'd put me in my place, or put a huge smile on my face!
