My car is gulping up coolant.

For some reason on idle the car fan seems to come on quite often, but when it does not for very long. Also it seems to be rather thirsty for coolant! Could it be because of the warmer temperature and my recent spirited driving with a full load meaning the engine is having to work harder for longer?

Could the fan be coming on because you have the air-con on?

Just noticed my coolant has dropped to around the minimum but I have only done 4500 miles since new. I thought I wouldn't have to top anything up until the first service.

as said the air con/climate has fans that come on when it's in use

if your coolant level is dropping I would say you have a leak

the first place to look is the coolant expansion tank cap, it has an over pressure relief valve built into it and they are known to fail
this makes the water pressure too low and therefore makes the water boil away
also a stuck thermostat can cause problems like this

failing that a split or loose coolant hose or heaven forbid a failed head gasket

Will have a look around for the things you mentioned! How can i tell if its the head gasket though?

a head gasket failure can come in many forms, but if loosing water as a result of one I would look for excessive water/steam from your exhaust or water in your oil (mayo buildup around oil filler cap)

I would have thought a head gasket failure will be less likely

Ok thanks, dont think it it is the gasket could be the A/C as the button is stuck in :)

I'm not sure that using the A/C all the time would cause the coolant to drop.
The coolant and A/C systems are sealed (supposedly).

The only liquid you should see under the car when running the A/C in hot weather is condensation which drips from the outside of the A/C unit.

Give the car a good run and use the heater fan. Can you smell coolant through the air vents?
Park up and lift the bonnet. Can you smell coolant or see steam?

If so you have a leak somewhere.
My first thoughts are a loose or split hose.

As nathwarr noted a head gasket failure will mean the oil looks like mayo.
Check the dipstick, that'll show if there's a problem.

Regards Guy.

Checked it over early and everything seems to be fine. Bit of water coming out of the exhaust at startup but it could be condensation? Bit of a mystery unless its my imagination but I will keep a close eye on my coolant levels!

Anyone with a picture of this over pressure relief valve? And how do you fix it? New coolant holder?

i is integral to the coolant filler cap, it can't be fixed really, just replace the cap

in the winter its easy to spot a faulty one as you can see a wisp of steam from the filler cap

Coolant Leak - This May Help

Guys, I seem to have a similar coolant leak to the one described above, as in using about 1 litre per 6 months, but I have just found the cause - It also came to my attention, as the better half complained she had no heating, even when climatronic on HI, although cold A/C was fine.

In my FR TDI, there are what I believe to be the flow and return pipes that pass through to the heater matrix, down fairly low right in the centre of the firewall. Looking from the engine compartment, towards the top of the metal pipe, but before it is connected to a rubber hose, there is a form of bracket with a nut through it, where the leak appears to have come from.

I haven't messed around with the bracket, as the car is just in warranty, so that'll be fun then!!

Anyway, it may be worth checking, as it appears that this could be caused by vibration, which I assume has physically fractured the pipe, as there is no obvious connection at the bracket, it just looks as though the pipe is bent.

Is there a common(ish) problem here, or am I just plain unlucky - Whatever the outcome, I'll let you know, as I'm assuming it'll be a dashboard removal, and possibly part of the engine, as in mine, there ain't much room.

By the way, I forgot to mention, that as the coolant is in contact with the outside of the pipe, it has crystalised, and there is a large amount of distinctly pink (G12+) running down the pipe, and in through the firewall, so get your torch out, and look for the pink!

Hopefully gonna take it in to Kings Seat Portsmouth, as they've always been top guys, and never quibbled, unlike the scrotums at my local stealership.

Have a look at the following photos - sorry for the bad quality, but I couldn't do much better with a mobile and a torch at 22:30 last night! - Guiness, I hope these help you pal, cheers.

Mine smells alot too, especially after its warmed up properly and driven a bit to clear it through... could be the lid of the filler cap, must check it again...
