I replaced the battery while ago and thought nothing of it. However recently I have had to use the keys in the lock (how embarrassing) for the 2nd time, then replace the battery again. I thought was a tad weird, how much juice can a single press use!?!?

I went to pop the locks and looked down at my remote and saw that the red light, I presume which flashes to indicate it has been pressed, was flashing at almost one flash a second.

I presume this is what is flashing the battery in the keys. [:@]

Any ideas what may be causing this

Take it apart & see if the contact is stuck.

Are you 100% sure the car is not locking/unlocking itself ?

If not, then there migh be a short somewhere near the LED

No it doesnt do that. I think I read in the manual a while ago, that lots of presses can cause the key to stop working. (maybe as a safety feature if its in your pocket getting hit by other keys)

Might have to go for a new flip key ;) you got one of those?
