It can damage the fuel pump as they are lubricated by the deisel.

Lift pump in the fuel tank pumps fuel up to the engine. Tandem pump (fuel and vacuum) is driven off the end of the camshaft and circulates fuel to the unit injectors.

A small gurgle in the fuellines when you turn the key is very common, but nothing to worry about.

my next question... everytime i turn the key to '3' position, i hear a squirt, presume of fuel.

is this one of those pumps?

you mentioned 2 levels of pump there (lift pump & tandem pump) is there a diagram to show the sequence of pumps?

correct this is the system priming.

as for a diagram i couldnt find one which relates to the 1.9PD, for some reason thetech doc only shows the fuel pump on the side of the engine head, but the 1.4PD shows the two pumps :-
