What tyres are people using?

Was flicking through myCroft program and saw a Michelin advert saying 20% of power is used on tyre/road friction.

Maybe the people getting lower mpg are using sportier/grippier tyres or underinflated tyres.

Both my and my fathers Ibizas are on Toyo T1Rs so still relitivly sporty and I'm still getting over 60mpg on an average commute through the twistys.

Thought I'd come back to this topic, I now how a Petrol Cupra instead of a Diesel and I easily see 43-45mpg on motorways sometimes when the speed drops to 50mph I see 49-50's.

I had someone whos a mathmatician and astrophysicist calculate how many mpg I should average if I hit <Number of miles> to 1/4 of a tank.

He estimated my average over my journeys was 45 mpg, Mine mostly comes in at 43-45 every journey to work.

Best way to check is do fill-to-fill logging.

Always fill to the same level (I do it until the pump shutoff kicks in, then check it's not spurious by trying again with the tap turned down). Keep your petrol receipts, and write the mileometer reading on them before you pull away from the pump. Log mileage and fill quantity, then after the second fill you can get miles-between-fills (spreadsheets are good at this). Divide by fill quantity and Robert's your mother's brother.

This is the ONLY way to do real-world checking of average mpg. Filling station pump gauges are exceedingly accurate, much better than the car's sensors, and the car's mileometer is probably the most accurate gauge in the dashboard.

Car fuel tank gauges are notoriously inaccurate, especially at part-empty, and really should only be relied upon for rough estimates.

I find my MFA overestimates mpg by anything up to 5%, but is usually within 2%.

The best way to get really decent economy is to avoid breaking at all and keep it in the highest gear possible. Try and cruise to roundabouts and traffic lights. Gets me 60+ if i do it through the whole journey and causes epic tail gaiting.

i get 65+ if i'm driving carefully and roughly 45 if i'm giving it some. must be the big turbo!!!!! so i tried to convicne my girlfriend the big turbo was an investment after all
