Running in an engine is one of those topics that always gets a good debate going. Personally I don't think there is a need to run in a new engine, in fact there is a school of thought that suggests running in is bad for an engine. Have a read of THIS and see what you think. I know the article relates to bikes, but the principle is the same.
Ultimately though it is up to each individual how they treat their car.

I believe cars still need breaking in. I've done 30000 miles in my 1.6 TDI CR - economy hasn't improved however performance has. It seems much more eager than it used to be.

Mine has now done nearly 17500 and economy just keeps getting better, got 67.3mpg on an eighty mile round trip running at max speed limits all the time.The dogs boll***s
