last saturday i replaced the thermostat as the temp gauge was all over the place. replaced stat and all ok gauge sits at 90 and on climate 51C says 90 but today ive had a smell of antifreeze in the car so ive checked for leaks and nothing.

bottom hose from stat to lower rad is very luke warm but further up the hose its cold, top rad hose very hot, both heater hoses going through bulkhead hot, heater getting hot in car, expansion tank return pipe cold, expansion bottle cold and water in bottle cold...... and this is after a 5 mile drive. cambelt and water pump was done only 1500 mile ago.

any help would be good peeps as i dont want to cook me engine.

Yeah you had your fair share of problems.
When its is COLD try blowing down the return hose on the header tank, see if it blocked (just an idea racking my brains here of things i'd try)

Try squeezing the hoses quickly with engine running to get rid of the air as i reacon you have an air lock in the system

I experienced this in my old renault when i changed the coolant and it was an air lock which came out by squeezing the hoses quickly to get the air moving.

give that a go

That to me is an air lock, leave the car ticking over with the expansion lid off and massage the coolant pipes.

right ive removed the return pipe and blowen down it and the water in the bottle over flowed, massaged all hoses / pipes i can, i left the return pipe off when i stated the car and at lastr water was pouring from the return pipe. BUT i still got a smell of antifreeze in the car when car is warmed up so had another look removed the engine cover and i think i may have a leak somewhere near the CTS. so tomorrow i will be having a closer look.

How accurate are the CC readings?

hmm hard to say really its not as quick to get to 90 like your needle if it does beat your needle then you probable need a new thermostat. When you needle "from cold" reaches 90 the temp sender will most likely be on 60 or there abouts, look at this thread http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=251809&highlight=coolant+temp+sender&page=3 for more info as I did tests! not 100% sure if mine was running right but it was a new sender and thermostat so its fairly accurate along as my car was running right which i presume it is/was

Yeah I probably need a new CTS and thermostat, the needle is resting on its side more often than going to 90 now.
But that's beside the point.

What I want to know is how accurate the readings on the CC are, and I mean for everything, not just the coolant temp.

can i jump on this band wagon aswell? im having continuos problems with mine. i thinking of trying it without the thermostat, then it cannot fail. if i still get the dodgey readings from gauge, then il be changing CTS when it arrives monday. if not, il get me dosh back. i have the same symptoms as meltonlad. all coolant pipes were very hard.

that was my only worry. i may attempt it, have nothing to loose. could you tell me which way the circuit goes? i always saw it as in the top of the rad and out the bottom. am i right in sayin this?

ok ive checked all over and cant find no leaks. but now ive just run the car and watched both CC and gauge. unlike yesturday when the temp gauge beat the CC to 90 now the CC gets to 90 and the gauge aint moved at all !!!!!!!!! both CTS and stat been changed. so now what do i do ??
