No power steering. Pump?

Hi there guys, brand new to Seat ownership. Just got a 1.2 Ibiza '52 plate :) The car has a power steering fault, whereas there it's not working at all.

So first of all, what is the most likely cause of it, I've done a wee bit of reading and most people are talking about the pump. But at the same time, How does the whole power steering setup work, as far I know there's no reservoir, is this correct? If that is the case how does it work? Also is the pump an easy enough job to do yourself if your handy with a spanner?

The other problem is the passenger side electric window doesn't seem to be working, is there an isolater switch somewhere or is it most likely a motor or such like has given up?

Lastly, is there any other very common faults that I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance :)

It should have a power steering pump with a built in reservoir, mine is behind the offside fog lamp - its an electric pump and not belt driven as in older cars, mines a 06 plate FR tho.

If its not working, it will need to be replaced, and theyre not cheap at all.

First thing is to check your fluid level. Easy access on the 1.2 AFAIK not like some of the others where it's under the battery tray, and yes the pump is a DIY job if it needs replacing.

More than likely this time of year its the battery, if you do a search youll find quite a few powersteering problem threads have suddenly started popping up recently as the weather has got colder.

Batteries dont like cold, especially if they are a bit old or on their way out, the electric power steering pump uses a lot of power so its the first thing to stop working when there isnt enough left in the battery to power it.

Mine has been doing it in this recent cold weather, I need to get the battery drop tested really and it probably needs replacing but I find that if I raise the revs to about 1500rpm for about 10 secs before moving off the alternator kicks enough juice into the battery to get the pump working and its fine after that. If yours doesnt work at all it could be a charging/alternator/wiring fault. Id get the battery and or alternator/wiring checked out first as this will be the cheaper option and the most common fault this time of year.
