Hi all,

When turning right from a 1/4 turn to full lock I get a rubbing/dull grinding noise from my front left tyre region. It started out very quietly but has become progressively louder. Occasionally I also get a clunking noise from the front of the car when turning the steering wheel during the first couple of hundred meters. I have checked the wheel arch and nothing is loose or out of place from what I can see. There also seems to be no odd wear on the tyre.

I have taken it to my local Peugeot which has a SEAT authorised maintenance section and the mechanic informed me it is "probably just the brake pad rubbing and its nothing to worry about". He said that he wont be able to do anything about it because SEAT would not authorise any work on a noise and assured me that he wouldn't let the vehicle out of the garage if he didn't deem it to be completely road worthy. He showed me the error report and no events have been raised by any of the cars systems.

Does anyone know what I can do about this or what it could be? As I said the sound seems to be getting progressively louder and it is starting to worry me a bit. I don't think the response the mechanic gave me is really acceptable. The car is a SEAT Leon MK2 FR 170 with the 18" factory fitted wheels. It has about 36000 on the clock , 6 months left on warranty and the mechanic said the brake pads have about 4000 miles left on them which should get changed on the next service.

first thing is check the tyre is not out of shape, jack up the front left corner until the the wheel can rotate, turn the wheel by hand feeling and watching the tyre for lumps. While it up in the air get a torch and check the coil spring for broken bits, check both ends of the spring.

It sounds like a drive-shaft CV. joint (the joint in the driveshaft that enables the road wheel to turn whilst tranmitting power to the wheels) anyway easy test. go to an empty car park and whilst driving forward turn the wheel to full lock ( ie full left then full right) if the dull grinding noise is worse and /or you feel it throught the steering wheel then this is your likely cause....

In my experience a faulty or worn drive shaft CV joint will make a clicking noise.

If the rubbing noise is rythmic with wheel rotation I would sugest a sticky brake caliper.

If it's just one rub at a time as you steer I would sugest a faulty suspension bush or drop link.
 
Hi Nath. The noise is defiantly rhythmic with the wheel turning. The mechanic said it sounded like the brake pads rubbing. If that is the case should I just wait until I have to change my pads in about 4,000 miles, or do you think I should get a second opinion?

i had this on front passanger side and was wheel bearing...took it in just befored warranty ran out and swapped no questions asked....at nidd vale in harrogate
