Noisy ? 2.0Tdi

I've read elsewhere (other posts on here) that EGR's sometimes fail, could i ask if one was to fail that it would cause a sort of blowing exhaust type of noise ?. For some time now, mine has made a sort of gruff exhaust noise that just doesn't seem right, more so under load and when the engine is cold, It doesn't seem noisy at idle.

Would this also cause excess smoke too ?, more often than not when i put my foot down there's a smoke screen behind, i can't really tell what colour smoke.

I know i'll end up asking the dealer but i've got visions of them saying "seems normal".
(it's a 54 plate with 20K miles)

Any help/comments would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I do not know the cause but my 2.0Tdi (04 25000 miles) has recently acquired similar symptoms. It sounds like a blowing exhaust but is noisier inside the car than out. There is also some vibration through the floor.

I cannot make any more checks as the car is back in the bodyshop. It was vandalised by some teenagers walking over the roof and bonnet causing £2500 damage. A new roof panel had to be glued (yes glued) on. I collected it after 4 weeks (meant to be 2). Then the bodyshop tried to correct the misaligned wipers. However they wrecked the wiper spindle making the car unroadworthy until they get a new part

Sorry to hear about the damage to the car Altergo.

Mine sniles when you accelerate fast past something with a roar that enters the cabin which is kind of nice, but I don't get anything else. You will notice smoke if the fuel is Supermarket stuff or you haven't given it a good run or if you pull away quickly and you notice it in other cars headlights behind. but that's normal for a diesel.

alterego "It sounds like a blowing exhaust but is noisier inside the car than out." - same here, can someone help with these symptoms ?, sorry to hear of damage too.
Tell - Mine snarls and roars too when really going for it, but the problem's on partial acceleration under load, it just seems to make a f*rting noise that sounds wrong. Must admit i do mainly use supermarket fuel, who's fuel do you suggest ?

Shell & Esso are good in my experiance.

The Farting sound sounds like a valve is faulty, im guessing here ,, but maybe the anti shudder valve or the recerc valve maybe? There is so many valves & sensors on the engine you realy should ask for a diagnostic from someone who has the VAG-COM software or a dealer.

I tend to use Shell as first choice, won't buy BP since it's more expensive and Esso as the second choice. The Diesel Mag like Diesel Car like Shell and so does the Sat. Daily Telegraph guy who advices not to use supermarket fuel. I use to find when I was doing a 120 mile daily commute that BP fuel gave me the greatest kick and responce but that was in a Citreon.

You do kick out smoke if you have been waiting in a queue, the engine gets hot and you pull away. That's just a general point not a techi answer which others would be much better with.

My Toledo 2.0 TDI also creates a lot of smoke when accelerating hard - always makes me feel a bit sef conscious! Admittedly I use supermarket diesel. Will try Shell and let you know.
I have also noticed a "different" exhaust note recently, which made me wonder if there might be a hole somewhere. Now I have read this, I'm not so sure...

I'm pretty sure it's not temperature related, though the engine really rattles/knocks on these cold mornings until it's warmed through.

I think i'll just ask the dealer for a diagnostic, does it take long, anyone ?

I'm experiencing this same noise. My Altea's on a 54 plate with 23k on the clock. The noise is a howl between gear changes and i noticed it more when the rear seats were down. It does make me feel a bit paranoid when driving through town. It's due for a service this soon so i will bring this up.

My 04 26K Altea has been in to Frosts SEAT at Shoreham today and they have diagnosed the noise as a front wheel bearing. No part in stock of course so I will have to put up with it for a bit longer.

The noise that my Tdi Sport has developed is a bit different to the others in this thread but I'd appreciate any ideas. It is difficult to describe but it is more of an overall booming sound that is above the engine noise. I have the DSG box and it still does it if I put it in Neutral so I don't think it is a transmission noise. I don't think it is tyre noise either or I would have always heard it. Could it be a wheel bearing? It's going in for service soon so I'd really appreciate any advice so that I can try to get the garage to sort it at the same time.
