i seem to be having an issue with the wipers on my leon fr mk2, when the screen is only semi wet e.g. wipers on intermittent the wipers screech across the screen and jump. I know this is due to not enough water on the screen, but all my other cars just seem to glide over the damp screen.

I also had a leon courtesy car and that was fine with just a damp screen, just slid over the dry sections without screeching.

any ideas how i can sort this, does the screen need polishing or something?

I have this same problem. I'm not sure if the wipers need replacing or if it's the screen that needs washing properly etc.

It's really annoying though.

Apparently replacing the wipers are approx 60 quid! (for front set)

I had to replace mine recently. They were making noise again after a couple of weeks but not as bad as before changing them. maybe ask the garage to adjust them when its in for a service (or any mechanic maybe). i got this done and its worked a treat. the new Bosch ones i bought were around the €60-70 mark from a motor factors so not exactly cheap...

Also the possibility the rubber may have perished if the car had been sitting around for a while?

hope this helps

It might also help to polish the glass and blades using a proprietary automotive glass polish. Build up of traffic film, oil residues and even car wash shampoo can cause what appears as smearing. It is these oils, silicones and contaminants that cause the screeching, as the blades are designed to glide over a smooth glass surface - not a semi-lubricated (oiled) one!

sounds like the wipers need replacing simple, trying using autoglym glass polish. To keep your wipers in good mick wash your windscreen a lot to get rid of the dush that collects on your wipers which eventually means they need replacing

I beleive you can simply replace the rubbers for a few quid, rather than paying full whack for the whole thing.

Just clean your wipers every time you clean your car. Done 38K in mine and wipers still fine. Although I don't use them very often as I have a RainX type product, but better then RainX (don't use RainX its total sh!te!)

I had this problem, car was only 4 months old with 2k on the clock. Started after I applied rainex. I tried every glass cleaner I could find but the jumping wouldn't stop. Stopped in at the dealer and one of the valet guys used their glass cleaner product on it and no more jumping. I've used rainex on my last 2 cars with no problems but the leon 2 style wipers definitely didn't like it.

Mine did this from new. I never got it sorted, went back twice to try - 1st time they swapped the wipers, second time said that wipers weren't covered under warranty.

I suspect it is the spring which keeps the wipers in contact with the screen being too strong as opposed to the wipers blades / screen needs polishing...

On a new car I've usually gone straight out and bought the likes of Bosch blades but I've always thought the ones on my other halfs Stylance were quite OK. The ones on my Cupra are quite the opposite and judder etc unless the windscreen is really wet.

Which brings me onto another point I was debating to raise as a separate post. It's not something I've seen on the other halfs but on mine when it's raining heavily, after the wipers have gone into the vertical position and are on their way back down the "pull / drag" the rain back across the windscreen for a good couple of inches until I presume air flow disperses the rain but then it's back on the next stroke. Imagine smearing vaseline over 2 - 3 inches of your windscreen on each side and that's what it does to the visibility (although I'm only bothered about the drivers side) - not good when added to the pillars. Is this common?

Agree, agree, agree!!!!!!!!!!

Never had the problem until I applied Rain-X. The problem is on the passenger side only! Works OK for the first half dozen wipes then Skip, Skip :censored: Skip! Press the Wash/Wipe. OK for the next half dozen wipes then the same problem. Rain-X is great if you are travelling at 40+ but at lower speeds you do need to use the wipers.

Tried everything and actually logged on tonight to see if anyone else was experiencing the same problem. It would appear they are
