Why is it i can never get anywhere near the quoted MPG figures for my V5 150?

I seem to get only 30-33mpg at a push on the motorway, when the quoted MPG for extra urban driving is 38. I have tested at constant speeds of 50, 55, and speeds between 60 and 70mph. If i go up a ever so slight climb this drops to about 21mpg.

I serviced the car at weekend with fresh oil and oil filter, new air filter, and have checked tyre pressures.

Any ideas please?

Never believe the quoted MPG :D

I struggle to get 30mpg Average back and forward to work of which about 70% is motorway driving @ 70' ish. I did go on a wee run last summer along the west coast of Scotland taking it easy around 50mph and did get my average over 200miles of 42mpg which I was very proud of

try it on a round secluded test track with 5l in it and nothing turned on not even the radio

MPG can be affected by a whole raft of variables fella, wind, temperature, batch of fuel, driving style, lights/heaters/radio on.

Whos to say that figure wasnt derived from a test drive in nice warm spain with a 9 stone pedro stig?

Id say the loss of 5mpg could be acceptable. Its nothing drastic therefore indicating no major problems, one thing that i noticed improved mine somewhat was a throttle body reset with VAGCOM, other than that, i wouldnt worry.

Sounds interesting, i don't think i can have a TB reset though as mine's got a cable controlled throttle rather than electronic. Perhapse someone can confirm this.

I take it SEAT must have a different way of calculating the MPG then. I know Peugeot used to do their tests using a full fuel tank, and 4 people on board or something like that.

Good to know it's nothing to really worry about. I get about 29mpg normally, but that's really taking it easy. When accelerating, even accelerating slowly, my MPG drops to about 11-13mpg. Now i know that accelerating obviously uses more fuel, but does that sound a bit low to people or am i worrying about nothing here?

Dont think it's anything to worry about, I take it you're getting these figures from your OBC mpg as you drive? Also have you tried a few tankfuls of optimax super unleaded?

Also reset your average mpg to 0 on the computer, try filling up with SU and having a week of no thrashing and hard acceleration (difficult I know). Getting into 5th as soon as poss which is easy on these motors as they comfortably pull from 30 in 5th. Try to vary between town and country driving and at the end of the week see what your average mpg is.

I know when I was driving my Impreza round Knockhill I was getting less than 10mpg :p
So any hard acceleration will kill your economy big time.

Yeah i use the OBC, but i also use the various MPG calculators that are on the net that ask you how many miles, how much fuel you have used etc and they are spot on with what the OBC is telling me.

I reset the OBC average MPG and trip computer after filling up with every tankful. I tried Optimax for about a month and it gave me about 3mpg more than normal unleaded on average which seemed like false economy once you have added up the extra cost for the Optimax. I serviced my car last sunday and maybe the Optimax will improve things if i tried it now.

Obviously if i were really worried about MPG i wouldn't have bought a V5, but it would be nice to know what sort of MPG is normal

If i floor mine to accelerate hard, it goes down to about 6.1mpg lol
