OE Tyres?

I'm sure 'what tyres should I buy' has been done to death- it has on most forums!

Anyway, My Leon's front tyres are some pikey crap at the moment, and thankfully the fronts are due for replacement.

So, as a starting point, rather than asking what I should buy, what would the car have come with as OE? It's a 06 TDI 140 Sport DSG with 17" wheels and the tyres are 225/45 17, Z rated.

I only know 18s but they were probably P Zero's. Mine came with Sport Maxx.

Guess it depended on what was offered to Seat at a good price at the time. I have seen Leons with Bridgestones, Pirellis or Dunlops (my 18" came with Dunlop Sport Maxx)
So unfortunately no standard issue tyre as it where.

My FR (18") has P Zero Rosso - can't imagine they would have been fitted across the board though.

Dunlop seem to be quite popular with SEAT.

My A3 (140 TDI) came from the previous owner with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres that seem well respected although they're very expensive.

I've always used Good Year Eagle F1 GSD3's - they're still available in a lot of sizes and I've been really happy with them. The replacement F1 Assymetrical tyre also seems to be getting good reviews if you can get it in your size.

I would never bother putting the OEM tyres back on unless they worked seemlessly with the car. Very often they'll buy batch loads of tyres depending on price on the day. They will only buy 'premium', but won't necessarily be the best tyre at the time.

Some of the mags seem to like the new Pirelli P-Zero. However most find they work better on rear drive than front.

I've had all 3 of those tyres on my car. The Conti's are worse than the other two for both grip and wear.

im due for a new set and above rules out the contis and ive just tried the vredestiens, so looks like it will have to be the f1 assys, but i would recommend the vredestiens plenty of grip and lasted about 8k.

The Vredesteins are very good, but do wear a little quicker than the F1 assyms. You have to balance this off against the price as the F1's are a good 20% more than the Vredesteins but the F1's will probably last 20% longer.

In the end I went for Conti Sport Contact 3. Much quieter, much grippier even though they're brand new at the moment.

I had the Bridgestone Potenzas and managed to get nearly 24K out of them......mostly motorway miles.

Changed the OEM Pirelli PZero Rosso's on mine for the Goodyear Assymetric's.

Best thing I did. Cracking tyres, improved handling and roadholding although road noise and wear rate similar.
