So the standard design vents oily air from the engine into the turbo inlet hose, and adding the can catches the oil and prevents the buildup in the tip/turbo/dv etc?

My current TIP has been on since it's birth 4.5yrs ago, so it'll be interesting to see when I take it off and put the new THS silicone TIP on next week...

Yes but the main place it all ends up is the intercoolers, when i changed my single to the twin LCR intercoolers there was about half a ltr in it, and all my pipes had signs of oil in them.

im tempted with a vent to air system. mine being a diesel must be full of crap

If you go vent to air make sure the "to Air" bit is out of the engine bay as the fumes will be sucked into the car, this is why i went for the closed option.

Phillc, are you not worried about the gas that reenters the engine? the sludge gets left in the tank however surely the gas isn't as clean/explosive as air being sucked in from the air filter?

i've searched/read endless threads re catch tanks and im still not 100% on which one.

It seems like a good thing to have on the car...

Having a quick read around, it seems the main reason that the manufacturers don't install these in the factory is because they are something that need to be emptied quite regularly (so as not to cause a blockage) and they know that many people would simply ignore.

How quickly do they fill up in general - I guess you don't want to leave it to fill up much beyond half way?

Wondering how caked my intercoolers must be now! I'd probably get one if I was to change to a FMIC and do it all at once.

No not really, all the worst bits will be in the catch tank all that will be going back into the system will be vapours.
