This Flexible regime has been made possible due to the development of new Volkswagen engines with the latest technically advanced longlife oil. These engines use built-in sensors that continually monitor the oil quality, making it possible to enjoy reliable and confident motoring for up to a maximum of 18,000* miles or 24 months (whichever occurs first).

I remember reading that too, and I asked about it. The service guy seemed pretty confident on his response that it is actually the ECU the one that does the monitoring and not the oil.

Maybe the guy was mistaken. Anyhow, he was very clear that the infotainment value is the one to go for if I wanted to maintain the warranty by using longlife.

I have recently had the Oil Change Warning come up too - Cupra 280, 9 months old with 6K miles - albeit many of them on short urban journeys which appears to make quite a difference. The car is on variable servicing and the local dealer in Poole appeared a bit vague but booked it in with them for next week for the reasons other folk here are quoting - hoping it just needs the oil change and not the inspection service yet.
