should oil level check by dipstick done when oil is cold or warm ?

Some people say cold, some people say warm

which one is it please

It should be checked when the engine hasn't been run for a period (which implies cold) because as soon as you turn on the engine it will start to be pumped around the head, block etc and give you a lower level reading.
