Hi,

Been looking for what sort of oil to put in my new Bocanegra! I've searched around, found lots of threads but there is lots of confusing and conflicting info.

I work opposite VW TPS in Derby so I just went and bought a litre of Quantum Longlife 3 5w-30 (VW 504/507).

I was pretty sure it's the right stuff, but I just wanted to check before pouring it in!

On a lot of the threads I was reading, people seem to reccomend Castrol Edge 5w-30, but that's twice the price and I'm sure Quantum Longlife 3 can't be bad... I thought they put Quantum in when you have your car serviced at the dealer?

Thanks,
Andrew

I bought Castrol Edge 5w-30 as its one thing I dont skimp on especially with a performance engine. Luckily Ive not had to use it.

I completely agree, but surely the stuff VW supply is more than good enough for their own engines?

Probably is yeah but why skimp when you've spent that much money on a hot hatch? Good oil, super unleaded fuel, good brake pads and good tyres for mine like.

No - I get it. I'm used to hot hatches and treating them well and I completely agree it's not worth skimping. I only run the Boca on Shell V-Power 99 octane, as per previous petrol hot hatches I've had.

But surely the oil that VW sell to go in their cars, formulated to match their exact specifications, is the best stuff to put in it? Or am I missing something?

Dunno marra av got castrol stickers on mine under the bonnet and that's what it came with and that's just what a put in like. A can see where ya coming from though.

Well I put castrol in mine when ive needed too. The Oil has never been bad but never great(compared to my last car. But it wouldn't be lol) but it had stopped using oil few thousands miles ago. Had it serviced and its used half the dipstick in 1000miles. Thinking its the oil Seat have put in it not as good quality. It is the right spec oil you have. Halfords does 5L for the price of 2 sometimes. Think thats what I got mine on :D

I don't follow your argument mate. You pay more for your petrol as it is a higher spec (octane), you pay more for better performance brake pads and tyres, thats fair enough. BUT..... why pay twice as much for an oil that is exactly the same spec as the VW Quantum oil?

Is it? I don't know if it is or isn't so I use what's been recommended.

I use 5w40 motul 300v in summer and 5w30 for winter. The thing to look for in an oil for this type of engine is what temp does it lose its viscosity. I've seen temps of 120° in my stage 2 fabia which would cause the vast majority of oils to become less viscouse which ineffect stops the oil having any real lubrication causing damage

I believe Castrol is very closed aligned to VW. I think the two oils are basically the same. I too have a Castrol sticker under the bonnet. However, I always bought the quantum oil for my last Boc. I recently went to buy some oil, said to the sales guy that it says Castrol under the bonnet and he told me that Castrol was owned by vw. True?

Brilliant, well that's sorted then. 7 quid a litre Quantum Longlife 3 suits me!

Castrol Edge 5w-40! £12 a litre but runs a dream!!

Oil i use

I use this :)
