When the car warned me the oil level was getting low (nearly 5,000 miles or so) I topped up with 0.5L which brought it under Max but not wanting to overfill. I prefer a dipstick as fitted to my last 2 Leon's.
A dipstick is a much easier way of measuring the oil, I can only assume the change to the digital gauge is to make the measurement more dynamic and give an accurate depiction of what the engine needs filling up to.
For the longest time it was rule of thumb that engines were topped up to the MAX mark, now the manufacturer stipulates that the level should be halfway up the dipstick (between MIN and MAX), I assume that allows for the expansion of the oil when it's hot, but keeps the level below the threshold of triggering an "oil level over full" message on the dash
