hi guys,

had the car idling for a bit longer than i should have earlier and upon driving away the red oil light came on flashing and with the beeps, jumped out checked oil level and it was good, opened cap and can see oil spraying around, i was 500 yards from home so just drove the rest of the way, parked it up, left it for 10, started and drove it to the end of the street and back and light came on again flashing with beeps.

have just changed the oil pickup pipe so doubtfull its that, i took the plug off the pressure switch and it was full of oil but im scared to drive it again, so ive ordered an oil pressure test kit that will come tomorrow.

what pressure from the pump should i be getting at idle and when revving if the pump is good? hopefully its just the switch but no codes when scanned.

for anyone with the same symptoms the problem was the oil pressure switch, where the light and
warning sounds come from the dash but the engine sounds perfect, heres what i did...

bought oil pressure test kit from amazon for 20 quid
took out the switch on the car and fitted the right adapter for it and connected up the gauge
started car and noted down the readings.

a healthy pump should show..

cold start idle - 60-90 psi (4.0-6.0 bar)
warm idle - 14.5-17 psi (1.0-1.2 bar)
2000rpm - 30 psi (minimum 2.0 bar)
3000rpm - 50 psi (3.5-4.5 bar)

mine showed..

cold start idle - 60 psi (4 bar)
warm idle - 17 psi (1.2 bar)
2000rpm - 42 psi (3.0 bar)
3000rpm - 55 psi (3.8 bar)

so basically confirmed pump is fine and putting out healthy numbers, so problem was the internals of the switch
letting oil through and contaminating the wiring which caused higher resistance and set off the warning light
on the dash (and the warning light in my pants)

replaced switch with one i got from a local motor factors and seems all good now. (y)
