Hey everyone

For an oil change on a 2014 1.4tsi 140bhp checking the code for the washer N0138158 shows it's a 2mm thick washer. Would a 1.5mm one do the job? I'm finding it hard to find a 2mm thick one off Amazon.

Thanks

Hi, new lugs (with washers) are available from seat direct or gsf for a pretty reasonable price. Think they were about £3 at gsf from memory?

Just buy the correct rolled/folded crush washer maybe even as a Febi branded item - 39733

Edit:- like in this link, okay you get a pack of 5 but cheaper per seal that buying singly https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276859442827

Another Edit:- by the way this Febi part is equivalent to both N0138157 and N0138158 I have one car that uses each of these part numbers and they work fine.

Another Edit:- the only "thing" about these Febi sealing washers is, they are only officially sold as a box of 25, so you need to find a sensible/enterprising seller that splits the box quantity down to smaller quantities - like the seller I linked to.

I bought a bag of rolled washers years ago and they work fine. It's one of those instances where there is more than one way to skin a cat. As long as it seals without having to overtorque it and it doesn't come lose you're good.

My first buy of these from a non VAG source was from China:)oops - maybe £5 for a bag of 10, I started using them on my wife's 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI - just in case they were not too good - they worked fine, my second buy from a non VAG source was these Febi ones from that ebay source, and they worked fine.

Initially, after running out of VAG ones, I bought a couple from ECP but I was not too impressed with them as they seemed to be made of very thin sheet material - but maybe usefully, had a coating of plastic on one side of the rolled material, anyway, I ended up with the first one getting damaged when tightening the sump plug on the Polo up to the correct torque figure - so felt the need to use the second one right away.

I could be wrong, but I think that you are referring to the drain plug type that has a captive flat steel washer, these, on later cars, were only intended for use at the engine build plants, and at least for the official VW workshop manual for the 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI, it gets binned after the first oil service and replaced with a different style of drain plug and one of these rolled/folded sealing washers.

The ones I have are just metal, there is no plastic, but I was careful to put the washer on with the join away from the sump. I've used them a few times now on different cars and they've been fine. I can't remember where I got them, probably eBay.

The original VW Group ones and the "China" ones were like that as are the Febi version - maybe all from the same factory!?

I'm sure that I've chosen to fit them both ways round, I could see some logic in including a plastic film on them - as a secondary sealing thing.
