OTA updates / esim / Wifi queries

Hello all

I've just picked up my Formentor V1 (2021 plate) and really pleased with it. I have noticed though the software and maps are lagging behind in terms of updates so want to address it.

The Cupra Connect has expired and the data plan seems next to useless.

A few questions

1) I have uploaded my system info - my software is on 1790 which seems old based on messages here, but can I update this myself? If so, where/how?

2) I have gone into System Information then clicked the Updates button, but nothing seems to happen there...

3) Do you need Cupra Connect or esim for OTA updates?

4) I connected my car to the home WiFi all fine, but then it dropped out so I get the notification to connect to WiFi. Since it dropped out, it now doesn't even bother searching for WiFi accounts to connect to at all?! I guess I was thinking if I link to WiFi it might generate updates. Is my theory right?

Hope people can help. The whole OTA/esim/connect/wifi/data thing seems wildly confusing to me.

Thanks

1- You need to go to a dealer. It is free of cost to upgrade.
2- OTA will only do minor updates.
3- Built-in eSIM is enough. No need for Cupra Connect subscription.
4- Wifi is pretty much useless, unless you have Cupra Connect. Once you have it, you can use your own Wifi for Apple Music and Tidal.,

Thank you mate!

Funnily enough an OTA update appeared today! So downloaded that too.

Sharing here my experience. After more than 1 year since I own this car, I went only one time to the dealer (except the oil service) for infotainment SW update, which was then updated to 1899, since then everything worked fine except that 1 out of 3 drives the infotainment system would restart few seconds after starting the car, which was quite annoying especially if I needed the google maps.

However today I had the very unexpected surprise to get a message on the infotainment saying that there is an available OTA update, which without second thoughts I went for it. Over 2Gb of download, which took roughly 15min.

The initial message stated that the car should be parked during the update, instead I drove but in quite some traffic jam on the way home so everything went fine. After the download I parked the car, switched off the engine and started the updated.
What was interesting to see, was the process itself. I’ll leave some pics here.

Some might ask, why not going to the delear. Well I owned many cars in my life so far but I never had a more unpleasant experience than at Seat/Cupra dealers here in Germany. It’s either the fact that they have underpaid employees or they lack experience but for me was a nightmare from finding appointments to them canceling my appointment one day before, after waiting 1 month (for the latest update).

I had enough so I took the decision of making all the necessary maintenance myself even though the car is still in warranty.

Cheers.

Thanks for the message.

The update you had, I assume that was not a full system update, just a smaller OTA update?

I wouldn’t call 2.3Gb a small update but I don’t have all the facts. I just hope that random infotainment restart is gone now (which I heard it should with this SW version)…time will tell.

Is that the 1940 update? They started doing it OTA now instead of going to the dealer? Interesting

Yea. Seems like it judging from the last photo. I did the update by usb stick myself but nice to know they are pushing ota for bigger updates too.

Full system update, MiB from SW v.1899 to SW v.1940.

I just hope that random infotainment restart is gone now
Indeed, 1940 (or 1941 on other VAG brands) is supposed to cure the known random-reboot "feature" of the MiB. I had this behaviour on my previous Octavia 4, and it was fixed by the update to 1941 - performed by the dealership, since there was no OTA available for Octavia at that time.

AFAIK VW and Seat/Cupra were the first to update OTA to 1940; Skoda was not providing it OTA... at least that's what I learnt via forums.
At some point during the year the OTAs were stopped for some reason that I don't know.
More recently, they resumed the OTA update to 1940; this time even Skoda joined this OTA adventure with it's 1941 update for Octavia - as the Skoda forum is showing...

This should be the way of updating the infotainment.
As I mentioned in my previous post, going to the dealer here in Germany is a major pain in the a**, very disappointing customer service overall on top of the extremely inflated prices they practice.
I might write a nice email to Cupra when I find some time.

How long did yours take to download? I got the pop up about an OTA this morning and it said it would be in 3 stages. Is that the one? I sat in the car after work for a bit but it never moved past the 139MB it got to in the morning so I gave up.

Can't give you an exact answer. It downloaded the complete file (~2.5GB iirc) while I was driving. Whole journey was around 35 minutes. It had completed by the time I stopped. I then hit the install button and it claimed it would take around 30 minutes (car cannot be used). It had completed when I returned about 2 hours later. Drove home and got another small software update pop up. Downloaded and installed in a couple of minutes.
