My '03 leon cupra R (210bhp) started to overheat on friday and then again on a short journey on saturday. Not wanting to do any damage to the engine and without any obvious problem (checked for leaks and oil and water levels) I pulled over and called the AA. They towed me to a local garage who claim that the water pump has failed. The car has only done 30,000 miles and been regularly serviced, warranty only expired 2 months ago.

Apparantly this is a common problem along with thermostat failure (which was the AA man initial diagnosis) Is this true?

Also, they have quoted me approx £500 to fit the new water pump. Does anybody know if this is reasonable?

If anybody can offer any advice that would be great,

Cheers,
Craig.

they usually recomend fitting a new timing belt and tensioner when doing this, but even with this included it sounds expensive, you have no warrnty left so take it to a reputable specialist and save a couple of hunred quid.
where you based,we can recomend a VAG specialist near you.
or pay throught he nose for inept dealer service.

mate ive the same current issue....

std replacement pump ,cam belt and tensioner 450 quoted by dealer

the same with a metal impellor (std one is plastic hence a common failure)

320 at jabbasport.

shop around.

theres a cambelt replacement guide under knowledge on the main page if your happy with a spanner

Thanks for responses, im new to this forum and appreciate your help!

Im in Milton Keynes and the car is at T&H, quote included timing belt and tensioner kit. They est. 1/2 to full days labour which i guess is why quote is so high?

The AA guy that picked me up said at first he thought it was thermostat problem which i was quoted £100-£150 inc labour. Is there any way i can tell if it was thermostat or water pump?

just reading a few of the other threads on overheating and mine was overheating when driving then cools when stationery so i guess this fits with the garage telling me it is the water pump.

i'd ring round some specialists mate. awesome at warrington fitted suspension did my belt and tensioner and put in some new brake fluid in half a day.
not sure of anyone near MK,stealth racing at banbury kinda way could help.

Have you found out what the issue is yet? I had the same problem few weeks back in London.. engine overheating... Once i got it finally looked at, it turned out one of the feeds from the aircon to the fans was dodgy or simply not working. All fixed now then got 50k service done, oil change and new air filter all for £180. Was very happy..

can anyone comfirm that the 225 BAM engined cupraR has a brass impellored water pump?
my invioce from awesome states 225 audi TT water pump,so i assume the 225 cupra R is the same and probably not suffer from water pump fatigue

I picked the car up last night, it was water pump. The guy kept the old pump and showed my the plastic impellor which had broken off.

Mine is a 210bhp LCR btw.

I actually got the work done at an independent VAG specialist, charged me £267 for water pump, new cam belt kit and labour...not bad considering the garage the AA dropped it off at quoted about £500!
