Hi all,
My Leon Cupra 180 has started to overheat when running for any length of time in the turbo range. It also loses power / boost. If I reduce revs the temp falls back very quickly and I can set of again with full power until the temp rises again.
I checked the fans come on correctly etc, and the cooling system appears fine. I'm worried the engine overheat being linked to the turbo.
Anyting you guys can suggest to check for?
Thanks. (great forum by the way!)

not off hand

could well be coolant sensor or temp sender though

needs logging on vag com to find out

ive got the exact same problem happening on my leon 1.8 20VT now.
did you ever find and fix the problem mate? im thinking at the moment it will be a coolant temperature sender (under my extended warranty, ofcourse).
If you have any ideas anyone, please get back to me ASAP,
many thanx!

It was the infamous water pump impellor failure! The car was 4 months out of warranty and they initially refused a goodwill gesture, but came up with just over £100 after some pushing. The total bill was nearly £400!
Best of luck

strange that. i was convinced my pump was still ok as there is still water getting pumped back up into the header tank. At the moment me and everyone ive asked is stuck in between weather it's the temp sender or the pump. going to have to do something about it very soon tho, i wouldn't like anything expensive to go wrong.

do your temp gauges rise???

Mine sticks at 90 but when i boot it sometimes i loose all boost then it will come back???

YES, mine raised right up to 120 if i let it. Obviously i didnt let it do that more than the 1st time it happened, but when it was left to tick over it would cool again back down to 90. When ever the temp went above 90, a lot of the boost was lost as well.

Still waiting to get the car back, should be tommorow with a bit of luck.

remember when i said a week ago i should be getting it back, i just got it back today, what a joke! i have never known a garage take so long to do a 4hr job. they've had the car best part of 2 weeks. unfortunately i work for a company own by the same chairman so i couldnt say much about it.
but just advise, NEVER TAKE YOUR CAR TO BE FIXED AT KITCHENS RENAULT in BURNLEY, THERE AN ABSOLUTE JOKE!

The temp rising is odd mate..as these Cupra's should sit at 90oc all day long in any weather. Im thinking the impellor on the water pump has broken up. Id have it checked out at a seat Aftermarket specialist. And if it gone, get a brass metal impeller. I know westec sell them..Not sure who else does.

if the vehicle does not over heat when idlerling and at slow speeds i would say the water pump has failed its a common problem if the water pump has not been changed and the vehicle has done more than about 60000-70000 i would say thats the problem. it happened to me will cost about £300 at a seat garage

was the water pump m8y. it needed the pump, cam belt and tensioner, apparently the tensioner needed replacing aswell, dunno y.
mine was 3 years old with 27K miles on the clock when it went. not the sort of time in the life of the car i would be expecting anything much to go wrong, but it did.

Hey all,
my leon 1.8 20vt has just had the same problem starting few days ago, if i drive over 40mph regardless of gear then the temp gauge rises well above 90 and looses all power. Fine when ites idle or at slow speeds. After reading about people paying £300 for just getting pump replaced i have sourced the parts and think you should all have a look at this

vwspares.co.uk - 1.8T water pump with metal impeller is only £28.95, Cambelt Kit is only £68.04 and the Tensioner damper £39.96

Mines is in today getting checked to see whats up and needing done but if it needs anything il be ordering for my mate just to fit.
