part number for plastic clip on clutch pedal

Driving home tonight, put my foot on the clutch in traffic and bang, clutch jumped straight to the floor and stayed there. I managed to move the car to the side of the road by starting it in gear. When i pulled the pedal back up, a white plastic clip jumped out at me. I'm guessing this is a clip that causes so many leon owners problems.

Does anyone know the part number for the clip? I'll have to cycle to the stealers or GSF (northampton) to get a new one in the morning.

Why did it happen in the middle of rush hour in milton keynes on a really busy road. It could of held on until i was closer to home

Phoned Milton Keynes SEAT and Northampton but none of them keep the parts in stock  also, they both said that it's NOT (i repeat NOT) a common problem :-o WTF.

Ordered the new parts (70p for 1 bit and £2 for the other) but thought i'd just get the peddle off to check it's ok. I undid the lower half of the dash and just as I pulled it off, the metal tab off the pedal fell onto the floor  trying to find a garage local who will weld it up for me.

What a pain in the ass it is to get the pedal off. Just about enough room to get the bolt out that holds the pedal in place, then couldn't get it past the piston the pedal pushed so had to remove the clutch switch. Hoping it goes back on ok.

It looks like some time in the past, it's had to have a new brake pedal on as well, still has the sticker on it showing part number and details.

Will have to drive the wifes espace tomorrow to go to work, it's like driving a bus.

quick update. Got the pedal welded, only cost £20. They sleaned off the old welds, re-welded the broken metal back on and then re-sprayed the pedal, done a good job.

Now just need to get the stupid clip tomorrow then put it all back together again.

I think my next purchase may be a small mig welder. I have almost everything else I need

Another quick update, picked up the parts from MK Seat and spent 1 1/2 hours fitting the repaired pedal and new pedal clip. Had to use several zip ties to help keep the pedal return spring compressed enough to get it in place so I could put the pin through the pedal. Eventually managed to finish just as it was going dark. Must have looked a right sight, laying on my back half stuck out the door. If i had to do it again, might consider taking the drivers seat out first to get more room.

LOL re hanging out the door!
On a serious note, you've reminded me, that its quite important to address the very white clip that has been in my ashtray since November!! I don't know how my clutch pedal has managed all this time.

Quite a difficult way of doing it but well done.

Easier way to do it is to undo the three 13mm nuts and take the whole clutch pedal box out of the car and do it on the bench, bleed up with an EZ bleed kit.

was thinking of taking the pedal box out but had to use the car next day and only had about 2 hours of daylight to get it done. I think the pedal had been broken for a while because it had stuck to the floor a few times over the past year or so, must have been hanging on for dear life

Hoping the weather is better tomorrow so I can get out and clean the car and fix the leaky door seals

It is a known problem. Whether it's "common" or not depends on your definition of "common".

Happened to me on an my Mk.2 Ibiza. The pedal is metal, with a metal box spot-welded to the side (not plastic as in jonesy118's diagrams from Vagcat) and the spot-weld holding the back of the box on fails, allowing the master-cylinder pushrod to push the plastic clip out through the back of the box, breaking the clip on the way and sometimes bending the pushrod. In my case the impact also made the cylinder seal fail and hydraulic fluid began leaking into the car.

The failure happens because the clutch pedal isn't welded up strongly enough and over time the single spotweld breaks. Rewelding the pedal with longer welds is a complete fix. But if the pushrod or seal is damaged, you also need a new clutch master cylinder. Oh, and a new plastic centering clip - but be aware that it was not this component that failed, it was the clutch pedal.

As I mentioned in my October post above, you've probably had the seal on the clutch pedal master cylinder fail. I was told that there are no kits to renew the seals and that replacement is the only option.
