If it's on 120k it might have had the cam and lifters replaced already. It doesn't seem to affect every car and if they havent been replaced then you could negotiate the price down to reflect this. You would be looking at around £700+ for a garage to do the work. Also make sure the cam belt and water pump have been replaced at 120k as thats a £300+ job as well.

Hi. Cheers for the help
If hasn't been done is it one of those things that will affect it at some point? Or maybe just be lucky?
Would you risk getting one if it's just gonna break as am just looking for something that's not going to be in and out of garage.

I think it's pot luck, some people have almost trouble free motoring the whole time they own the car.
Out of all the things that broke on my car the camshaft/lifters annoyed me the most as diesel engines shouldn't really ever wear out if they are looked after.
I am a bit disappointed with how many parts have needed replacing, but even though many parts have failed the car was always drivable and I don't think any other car comes close in the price range.

Ah right but shall I take the risk that's the big question? Haha
Had two cars now that cost me the earth to repair so just need some trouble free motoring!!

My first seat was the mk1 150 Cupra. Did me proud for a good few years to be fair.

Towards the end though she would go into limp mode when you accelerated hard, think this was down to the turbo veins sticking. If you turned it off then back on again it would be fine.

Best thing you could do on a test drive is put your foot down hard in third and fourth to see how it responds.

Also it had the very common water in the passenger footwell issue. This is down to the seals on the door that leak. There is lots of info on here on how to fix this though so that's no huge problem in all honesty.

Thanks for help also will check the footwells out.
Looks like need give it a good hammering when I test drive it, just need one with a good history really!

At the end of the day cars are always going to need something sorting out that's just wear really. However if you know there is a problem you can either get the seller to sort it or reduce the price to the amount that covers any parts and labour needed.

Yes bud very true. Just need go find a good one now!!

If you are definitely going to get one, get a code reader before you buy the car as this will tell you any logged faults and it will pay for itself in no time. Depending on the code reader you may also be able to see things like boost pressure, MAF readings, alternator voltage Etc...

As mentioned before check for leaky doors/ scuttle panel/ pollen filter (Wet carpets)

I would expect these parts to have been replaced after 10 years:
Door locks (Specially rear as they are harder to replace than the fronts)
Glow plugs
Battery
Alternator
Starter Motor
Maybe camshaft position sensor

Listen for deceleration whine on the gearbox which is common, if you have acceleration whine then the gearbox could be on it's way out.
Check the undertray is still there as I think they are over £100 to replace.
If you can pull the large pipe out of the EGR and check if it is clogged.

That's a good idea one my friends got a vagcom so I'll see if he will come along and plug it in.
I'll take that list with me and check the service history out in detail!

Wish I could afford I mk 2 but can't get a nice one for my budget

The PD150 is a great engine, and a bit wasted on just commuting, unless you are doing 200 mile commutes... Comes into its own around town and in stop-start motoring, as it has so much more power at low revs, more than anything except an LCR, which can only match it.

Sounds good, looking to go around uk mountain biking again so be good for that too... just been to show the missus one and she didn't like it haha! Have to bring her round!
