pedal box damage

This could be a dumb question but here goes...

Right, this morning I've been having a look at the state of the pedal box but there's no sign of any movement or cracking to cause the pedal to stay down.

But, I disconnected the clutch cable from the pedal, pushed the pedal down by hand and the spring slammed it into the floor...this surprised me! I though the spring would have pushed the pedal up but I guess it's the clutch itself that pulls the pedal up by the cable...?

Am I being stupid here - should the clutch pedal spring do this?

I suppose if the clutch itself is weak (fairly unlikely as it's not too old) or the cable is sticky then these could be the problem.

Any ideas what to try next without spending too much money? Clutch cable is pretty easy to change so I reckon that should be the next thing to try.

Cheers,

Stuart

Hi Cruiser87. Thanks for your reply.

Since I posted this, I had a chat with a friend who's a mechanic (a VW specialist) and he confirmed that this should happen without the cable being connected - the over-centre spring acts as a 'servo' to make the clutch pedal easier to push down.

Having played around with it a bit more, I noticed that the spring resists pressure for the first inch or so then once you're past that point it pushes the pedal to the floor.

Anyway, I'm going to get a new clutch cable and try that. My friend mentioned that sticky clutch cables are quite common on Mk3 Golfs and given VW/SEAT's parts bin mentality, there's a good chance that this problem finds its way on to the Ibiza too.

Fingers crossed...

Its Craig btw. Hope you get it sorted mate.

I changed my clutch cable on saturday and it has made a huge difference, the pedal is really light now compared to what it was.

Hi Craig,

I ordered a new one today and I'll whack it on on Saturday. Looks like a doddle.

A slightly late update but, between Christmas and the New Year, I changed the clutch cable and all is now well.

Lovely, smooth clutch action, no creaks, no squeaks and it's transformed the way it drives.

Cheers,

Stuart
