Performance chips?

Hi all,

I went to Bristol Volksfest today and stumbled across a stall from Smiths Autos. They are a Bristol based business and throw work the way of a company called performance chips. They had a special offer and that day which was a re-map for all VAG cars for 250 quid rather than the standard £350. I immediately was attracted as other re-mapping companies charge between 400 and 500 quid so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately the man doing the re-mapping laptop was broken and the other out of power so was unable to carry out the re-map. He stated he would come out and do it at my place of work and takes it a couple of hours. They stated a 10% increase in bhp and torque.

Has anyone heard or dealt with performance chips?

What is the difference between the likes of Custom Code/Revo and this kind of company?

Does the price seem reasonable?

Thanks in advance

Matt

Yeah 10bhp for £250 bit pricey if you ask me, to be honest i think you get what you pay for, i have heard very good things about revo and custom code so far, and i know i would much rather cough up the extra dough for a better peace of mind and a much better power increase,
one things for sure i would not want some cowboy messing up my 07 plate fr (or whatever your driving), for the sake of few pounds!

Matt has the NA 2.0 litre petrol which is only going to see marginal gains from any company - I waan't knocking performance chips, rather the value of mapping the NA engine

I used the word cowboy loosely i have not had any experiance from these people, just saying in my eyes what i would do, by all means go for it! But ive always thought you get what you pay for in anything in life!

rather than going down the usuall road of Revo or Custom Code, i had mine remapped by Will at P-Torque. £275 all in, and have to say its the best £275 i have ever spent on a mod!

see there you go mixed comments, i did not mean to sound like an @rse slagging off cheaper companies, just going off my experiance as a whole, i mean if you are going to do it surely it would make sense to go down the exhaust and air filter road before hand??

I know you didn't mean it like that! I intend to get an exhaust as filter is already fitted but I was told it will only complement it. Not sure if I can get an exhaust system for much cheaper than £250 anyway. The guy is giving me a call early next week and I will probably go ahead with it. Good to see that some people have tried some smaller companies and it has worked out well!

Might be worth a visit to a rolling road for power run before and after remap. Just to see if there is any difference.

Try to come to some arrangement with whichever rolling road you go to for cheaper second run, if you tell them what has been done, to keep the cost down. Not really in favour of remaps unless you can see the improvement and to check fuelling etc is still OK. Make sure air temp, humidity, maybe air pressure, is about the same to compare (if that's possible!).
