Play in the steering.....[:@]

i can feel play in my steering wheel, when i turn it to a point and steer a little from left to right i can feel the play and it knocks/clunks

i can also feel it in my feet.

i first thought it may have been the top mounts but im beginning to think its the steering rack?!

anyone else had the same problem or changed the steering rack as im guessing the engine has gota be dropped or brought forward to do so?

or does the steering rack have any adjustment!

gona get it in the garage to check everything, but ive gota a few jobs on my other car first!

any help will be great thanx

mine does this too, not sure what it is, thought it was the rack, but could be all sorts

yeh, well thats what im gona get it in my garage for to check everything over and replace whatever needs replacing.

i might aswell fit my k03s and intercooler while im there! lol

could be: top mounts, steering rack, track rods end, sterring column......

I was just about to post this too!! i got the same problem, its at a particular point when the steering wheel is to the right and i move it left and right softly, i feel a knock and abit of play!

Thought it could have been something to do with my wheels also (Spigot rings) and the abpve you have mentioned

Funny things is when im driving its fine.

Gonna look more into it now.

mine is ok in a straight but go round a corner on a rough road and i can feel it through the steering wheel

Mine used to do this when pulling out my drive and on rough roads, easy fix. Look down the steering column behind the dash. Pretty sure there is a small plastic trim with plastic screws remove this and tighten the three bolts on the column. woala

Could be your top steering bearing, which is housed where your ignition barrell is, I bought one once with the intention on fitting it to a friend car after it been a sucessful fix on another friends car but he sold it before we got round to it.

It was the same problem as you describe, there about £23.00 for the units. If your interested I have a brand spanker in a box somewhere.

Any pics?, not quite sure where u mean.

remove the cover under the dash (three screws and it removes the small air pipe too) and theres a little cover where the steering rod enters the bulk head (remove two plasic nuts) and theres a sleeve with two 13mm nuts, i could feel the play in this so i tightened the two nuts up and as Spud says.....woala!

Sorry no pics as i done it so quick lol.

But just do as said here :

Remove the cover under the dash in the footwell (three screws and it removes the small air pipe too) and theres a little cover where the steering rod enters the bulk head (remove two plastic nuts 10mm either side of the cover and it just slids down ) this will reveal the steering rod which goes through the engine bay with two 13mm nuts (Bronze color) you may have to turn your steering wheel to get full access to the nuts, i personally can't feel the play in the connection there but i tightened the two nuts up and its sorted!

Very quick to do and takes about 5mins!
