Well, bitchin' aside, I would like to know the real cause for this...

As a guess, I'd say the ECU program is only written to deal with so much engine timing for a given model, so if you exceed what the car is expected to achieve realistically then maybe the program cuts out and reverts to forcing your engine into something more mundane to prevent damage and then gets reset when you turn the engine on and off.

Just a guess!! Ask a dealer (not the one you go to).
