Hi all!
Was just wondering if there any power gains to be had from this engine if so what parts/mods are required?
Just looking into this see if it's worth bothering with, I understand it's a big cost for not much gain but what's the max I could sensibly be looking at!

Any help much appreciated

I think that the easy answer is :- "stop it - leave it alone!"

One other thing I'd say is, swop that car for the later 6J version with that engine as the 6J is so much lighter and seem to possess absolutely no rolling resistance/stiction - all of which gives you a far better power to weight ratio.

To put things in prospective, if you had the bad old, but reliable BBY 75PS engine in it, you would know what a bad combination that was.

Remove the spare wheel :)

Seriously, anything you can do to remove weight will do more good than performance mods. You could even remove the air con if desperate.

To be fair I have the 75ps one and found the in-laws 85ps 6j not much better. But then mine did put out 86 on rollers.

They're alright once you find the narrow power band and keep them wound up like a go kart! The rubbish responsiveness under 3k revs is the worst bit.

Oh and put premium fuel in it. It does make a small but noticable difference in driveability.

Well, it depends what you need from that car, if it is realistically cheaper insurance and low overall running costs and reliability, then you have made the right choice. For my sins, I considered buying my wife a new Polo 6R-C with that engine, really just to avoid all the nasty money grabbing demands with all the other available engines over the longish period of ownership. Unfortunately, common sense prevailed and I managed to order her one of the last 1.2TSI 110PS SEL 6speed Polos to be built, I know that this will cost me a lot more over the period of ownership than the 85PS 1.4, but it will be more pleasant for her to drive.

I felt the need to stick with VAG as I have VCDS - so when things/lights "happen" I will be able to assess what is happening without being shafted by a dealership. Modern cars are a bit like that in my opinion.
