Noticed a bit of a leak coming from the track rod end, end of the rack.

I stuck on a new cable tie to see if the old one had stretched a it, but it's still leaking slowly.

I am going to have to change the boot by the looks of it and just wanted to check the procedure for removing the track rod end.

Is it just a case of unbolting it from the hub and sliding the whole thing out, replace the boot, and cable tie, and then refitting. Replace the fluid and that's all?

Thanks

Sounds expensive

What is required to fix that?

If it's that you need a refurb or a replacement rack.

May not be that, buy looks like my old polo's did. Is it lowered?

Is the leak thick or watery?

I should say that the fluid leak is quite small, and the gaitor does not have any fluid in it

Car is completely standard

The leak was not that severe I just used a rag to wipe as much of the fluid away from the wishbone, which is why it maybe looks worse lol

Yeah my mates does this too!

The fluid sits in the boot so its not obvious its leaking!

New rack req

had the same prob lasted 3wks had a recon rack fitted £140+vat I hit a big pot hole:(

Mine is only loosing fluid very slowly, maybe goes from max level to min in no shorter than a week?

As opposed to never.....?

If it runs dry you'll be paying out so very much more money.

Lol! I take it its an LCR, because fletch at work is getting a recon unit for £95 off eBay, but its a pd150 so not the quick rack, and like £25 back for the naff unit! Same as turbos, on exchange so they can make money on the old one.

I had a small leak about 3 weeks back, thought nothing of it and decided I would sort it at its next service (due this week). Pulled out of works car park last Tuesday to the noise of the steering pump screaming, turns out my rack has gone so its
On the ramp as we speak, £80 from the breakers yard and around 3 hours labour, £200 all in!

If I go to replace the rack, what other cars use the same one?

Mine is a 2001 Leon 1.4

Thanks

Probably mk4 golf but I'm no expert, had the rack changed on my lcr this week with a new cv boot and 4 wheel alignment to the tune of £380, the rack on yours is quite different though so would expect it to be a lot cheaper
