hi

just joined the site we have two cars in our family my wife has a seat altea referance sport and i have this Astra VXR its lowered on eibach springs and has a full stainless steel remus 100 cell sports exshaust(sounds awsome) pushing out 260bhp.......

i love it but i just dont use it enough less than 5k miles this year is just a waste so what we are thinking of doing is selling both cars and getting a new leon but i dont know which one to get as its going to be our only car it has to have 4 doors be reasonably good on fuel and of course feel a bit sporty coming down in power we are going to notice the differance so i want a little bit of poke in it so any advice on what to get would be great thinking either cupra or FRdti or maybe a btcc kitted leon what do you think we should get?

I'd go for the Leon TDI FR. Good MPG and plenty of torque will help with the transition from your VXR. Also the Leon is good value and has loads of toys like bluetooth (optional) and cruise. I'm waiting for some finances to clear and I'll be buying one. Not sure if Yellow, Red or be bonkers and get white which I hope comes with a years supply was n wax :D
 
i really like the white dont think the wife does lol waxing isnt a problem i do a little valeting/detailing in spare time for a few people so the vxr is washed at least twice a week and clayed and waxed monthly as it is!

if i went white probably look at getting black wheels and full tinted windows

Go for the Seat Leon TFSI, your low mileage will mean problems if you go for the tdi version, besides will be less of a gap between performance/drive from the VXR.

will probably be doing around 12000 miles a year if we have a leon as it will be the only car we will have as the vxr and the altea will be going so will the dti fr be ok for these miles?

Wayner your on the borderline for petrol or diesel

i drive a DSG FR and on a run can get about 35 mpg but round town it drops to about 24mpg

yeah borderline at the moment.... problems with DPF filter on TDI's if you're not a motorway commuter... imo... short journeys keeps kicking in the DPF light. I've just had my car back a week from regeneration at the garage and the light has already kicked in once.
 
The Cupra is a great car and possibly a step up from the VXR. Doesn't suffer from the same torque steer problems the Astra does and feels a lot more steady on the road.

Fuel economy isn't great, I've done 3800 miles now and on a run I might get 30 mpg if I stick to or below the speed limit. Drops to 27 or lower if you drive it enthusiasticly. On paper (in the brochure/car mags) the Cupra is more economical than the VXR not sure if this is true in real life.

to be honest all this torque steer talk is all down to clarksons views on a pre production model he test drove back in 2005 the production model does have a little but knowwhere near as much as the pre production one.i havent driven the cupra but i have driven the st compare it to my vxr and its just boring to drive the vxr is a drivers car one which is great fun to drive not just a car that feels like your out on a sunday afternnon drove which for thats what the st feels like the vxr is a car that you have to get used to driving to get the most out of of it more like a race car if you know what i mean power delivery is a bit harsh in 1st and 2nd and you can feel all 260 horses which is great fun to drive .

at the moment we have our eye on a silver tdi FR 170 or a referance sport tdi 140 btcc kitted leon but dont know hich one we like best.liking both but sometimes the kitted one looks a bit ott but i like it and the fr is a bit more powerful and could be made to look cupraish easily

I have actually driven the Astra VXR so my comments about the torque steer are from first hand experience. It was actually one of the first ones in the U.K. I do know somebody who has the Swiss version Opel Astra OPC and he loves it, think he is on his second one now.

The BTCC kitted Leon is a love it or hate it type thing. Quite a few people on here aren't over keen on it but I have met people (such as my pulmber) who love it. It could make selling it on more difficult when the time comes.

I don't think it would be that difficult to make an FR look like a Cupra. Externally I think the only differences are the 18" Orion wheel, black mirrors and grill surround plus the badge at the back. Oh and the exhaust...
 
very easy to make an FR look like a cupra and IMO going for an FR is a much better bet, your goign to have better resale value that the KIT model and loads more toys

FR all the way. The 140 doesn't have the urgency or driver feel. It's like the ST. It's too pleasant. There is a love or hate the ride feeling around the FR TDI. I personally love it. It feels alive and connected to the road. The body kit ref sport feels leaden and too numbed for me.

I say try them both but If you love the VXR, you will love the FR more than the normal with a big bumper ;)

Don't forget the brakes, average 260bhp from stock, and the fact it's not a vauxhall :D
 
Hi Wayner, recognise you from astra SRi , used to have an astra VXR myself, then a vec vxr and now a Seat FR Tdi , sold the astra for the same reason, needed 5 doors, looked at a T9 as well but Gareth offered me a pittance for the vec and I fancied a change. The FR170 is a pretty quick car when you get used to driving it, doesn`t have the same urgency about it as the astra, but the seats are very similar and size wise it is about the same. I would defo reccomend the TDi , as said above heaps of midrange Torque ...

My astra didn`t suffer from torque steer either, I guess like the any car you need to drive it properly and flooring a 240bhp fwd car in 1st / 2nd will enevitably give a bit !

i remember your astra sri days lol

i think the body kitted leons are a little chav for me nice looking but most know its a referance sport or people will think its a referance sport when it could well be a fr or cupra so i`m thinking of going seat leon fr in lunar grey that is the silver clour right? not too sure on engine either petrol or desiel with 18`s side skirts and rear spoiler got a qoute for petrol brand new of £16239 with out skirts and spoiler will probably add the black front grille and some shiney black wing mirrors and i`ll black out the front bumper like the cupra
